Default uneven muffler tips

i installed my muffler tips a while ago and they are uneven. The driver's side does not stick out far enough, whereas the passenger side one is perfect. I took a bunch of measurements and noticed something strange.
It appears that the cat is uneven from one side of the car to the other. It is about 1" further in on the driver's side which explains the tips being uneven. However what i haven't figured out is how do i adjust it?

Any clues?

Cheers,
Boris

try rechecking to see that the mufflers are hung correctly and that the tab on the back of each muffler is hooked onto the chassis.

When I installed my RSRs a few weeks ago, I had to take all the stuff back off on one side when I noticed the tips being uneven after installation. Even though I had made sure the tabs were hooked when installing the mufflers, one had slipped out somehow and wasn't hooked correctly. That was enough to cause the bad tip alignment.

Hope your fix is as simple as this.

I seem to remember a thread a LONG time ago that concluded that there's always an offset between left and right tips on all 993s.

Dave's right (and has a killer memory ).

The offset is there, and oddly enough isn't noticable until you take off the tips, then put them back on. Now all of a sudden you think you did something wrong, but if you look closely, you'd have to be VERY creative to put tips back on incorrectly.
.....so there I was over 3 years ago with the first mod: newly plated tips instead of the ugly dull-yellow-stained ones and I'm wrenching, adjusting, wrenching, contorting..."these tips ain't gonna install any different," I'm thinking. Hence, the thread

Dave & Edward,

Thanks for recalling that as I've been going nuts trying to figure this out...

So with that said, is there a way to extend the tips around 1.5 inches?

Cheers,
Boris

It is all about how the mufflers hang. When I did my RSRs I had a "wandering eye" and when I rechecked The driver's side muffler was not properly aligned. Unforunately many people do this work under ramps, floor jacks, and jack stands. It is hard to check symetry of the whole exhaust system.
FYI, I spassed out in December and bought some Fabspeed chrome exhaust tips on ebay. They were much longer than stock and were two different lengths about 3 inches different. I do not think there is any "offset" with regard to factory tips/mufflers.

did you just take off your old tips and put on the new ones and have them come out uneven or did you have more apart than that?

have you put the old ones back on the see how they fit?

if not, do you have old photos, you might see how they were before.

when i changed to factory SS tips on my car, they stuck out to far for my likes, so i shortened the pipe between the back of the tip and the muffler flange. you could add some material there to make yours longer and even.

i changed to RSR mufflers at the same time as putting on my new tips...

I just don't see how there is any adjustment in hanging the muffler. The end that fits on the cat only goes one way and the hanging mechanism that attaches to the body frame is the other.

I guess extending it works, so how do i accomplish that. Is that just a matter of going to a muffler shop and getting an extra piece of pipe with antoher collar?

Cheers,
Boris

Personally, I do not think it is always related to muffler placement. I have muffler bypass pipes on my car, and the right tip sticks out about 1/2" further than the left tip.

I recently had my engine out for the LWF/clutch uprgade and when I got the car back I notice that my drivers side tip stuck out at least an inch further than the passengers side. Is it necessary to disconnect the mufflers when dropping the engine? I have not had a chance to really get under the car to see if the mufflers where not hooked back up correctly but I find it hard to believe that they were that uneven before. Unfortunately I do not have any "before" pictures for comparison.

OK I HAVE A SOLUTION, albeit it a bit ugly. I went to my local midas and had them weld an extension in between the tip and collar. Put it on the car and it is perfect. I told them 1" but no more than 1 1/8" and they got it!!! Looks great - i'll post a pic.

Cheers,
Boris
