Oil pressure readings

I would like to hear what the "normal" oil pressure readings are for the 993s.
My car runs at 4.5 - 5 bars at anything over 1500 RPM. It idles at about 3.75 bars at about 900 RPM.
I am assuming that this a good thing but seems to be unusual that a guage reads "normal" at the high end of it's scale.
My experience in other industries is that they try to have "normal" run in mid-range.
Any comments?

I thought that you had an aftermarket gauge.
In either event, take a look at the owner's manual for an explanation of what teh readings are. It's a bit convoluted, but, essentially, any reading that is not made with the car warmed up and idling (i.e. not under load, while moving) is not accurate at all and not to be taken into consideration. However, the reading at load seems to be closer to 0 than 4-5, so your description is very surprising.
In either event, take a look at the owner's manual for an explanation of what teh readings are. I have driven a lot of 911's (993's and older 911's) and have never seen oil pressure as high as yours where the engine is warmed up to normal operating temperature (oil pressure is Very sensitive to oil temperature on 911's). I suspect either your gauge or your sending unit is defective.

I had also suspected that there was something wrong with my oil pressure gauge, but I have seen the same levels on several other 993s. I was told this was normal and like the oil level gauge to not rely on it.

some of the above posts have me scratching my head ....
I think there is some confusion between the oil pressure gauge and the oil level gauge.
It's the oil level gauge that must be read at idle, oil warmed up etc. etc. It's this gauge that should not be completely trusted....the dipstick over rules the gauge.
The oil pressure gauge should always be showing the current engine oil pressure!! Whether the engine is cold, warm, on a slope, or if you have your left hand on your right leg![Wink](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
Check the connection at the oil pressure sensor/sender.
To mechanically test the oil pressure, the workshop manual's procedure is to remove the oil temperature sending unit from the oil pressure sending unit, and screw in a mechanical gauge.
With oil at operating temperature ( 80-90C ), the pressure should be 2-2.5 bar at idle. at 2500 rpm, it should be above 5 bar

At speed, 5+ bar has been my experience regardless of oil temp or oil level (within the high and low range of the nearly unreadable dip stick).

Just came back from a quick tour around the Island and here are my observations:
Outside Temperature 35C
Oil quantity full
Oil temperature slightly under mid position
Press:
Idle which is 750rpm at my car: 1.2
@1500 rpm: 3.5
@2000 rpm and above: between 4.5 and 5.0
Hope that helps, your idle appears to be a bit high to me also.

I'm with Mike, I think some of you guys have oil level and pressure gauges mixed up.
Above 3 idle pressure seems high (are you sure your engine is fully warm, temp. at least around 8.30-9 o'clock mark?) but 4.5-5 when above 2000 rpm is totally normal.

I was a bit confused by some of the discussion as well. I am talking strictly oil pressure gauge, not temp.
So, I think I am probably "normal" except that the idle pressure may be a bit high.
If it is, what could that indicate? I immediately think that it could mean some blockage to flow somewhere, causing excessive pressure at the sensing point. Does this make any sense?
Or, maybe just the idiosyncricies of the gauge.

check the connection at the sensor.
if there is no change in the indicated oil pressure, do the pressure test with a mechanical gauge that I mentioned above.
I would suspect,and check the connections, sender, or gauge, before worrying about the engine's internals

Here's my 2cents- At normal operating temp - oil pressure should read rpm in thousands plus one - i.e. at 3000 rpm oil pressure should read 4 bar or higher. At idle - full warm oil pressure should read about 1.1 to 1.3 bar. Cheers.
