Non maintenance extraordinary items are where costs will be seen, things such as:
Steering Rack rebuilds $600- $1200 (age-related)
Clutch refreshes $1800 - $2500
Syncro refresh in the transmission - $1000+
Hydraulic lifter adjusting cartridges $600 + labor
Struts, if they have not been previously replaced $1800 to $3000 plus $500 or a little more on labor
and all the little plastic parts such as the vacuum actuators on the engine, window switches and other

So the biggest influence on cost is how many miles on the car, how was it used by the previous owner and what of the above has already been done.

The lowest cost to own will probably be an example with 70,000 miles + or where most of the above extraordinary items have been done recently.

Just wondering if you want to answer, those 4 mayor works. is there a rough estimate to know how many miles they have left after getting them fresh. I mean, if I buy a car that just got struts replaced, how many miles could I do until the next replacement?

Thanks again for your help. I do appreciate all this knowledge

This is my maintenance schedule (maybe it will help you):
  • Oil/Filter every 5k miles or 1 year
  • Pollen and engine air filters every 15k miles
  • SAI checked/replaced every 15k miles
  • Engine belts every 30k miles
  • Cap/rotor/plugs every 30k miles
  • Transmission gear oil every 60k miles
  • Ignition wires every 60k miles
  • Fuel filter every 60k miles
  • Power steering belt and fluid change every 100k miles
  • Distributor belt every 100k miles
  • Brake and clutch fluid ever 2 years
  • Check oil/ac series resistors every 10 years
Clutch for me was at 130k miles due to the dual mass flywheel failing.
Hydraulic lifters were at 103k miles.
Power steering rack is still going strong with no leaks.
Engine is still going strong at 136k miles with no rebuild and uses 1 qt every 3k miles.
Transmission hasn't needed a rebuild, shifts smoothly, and hasn't shown any signs of needing to be opened up.
LSD is still operational (partly) with an estimated holding force of 10%.

I think Martin S is near you - try shooting him a pm - see who he recomends - he knows the 993 Very well LOL
As far as struts go, original Monroe's (orange from Belgium) only lasted 40,000 but they were on their way out after 20,000. dependant on driver or serious pot holes.
Sway bar bushings may be an iussue? Easy diy. larger item front a arm bushings although doable as a diy you should read up here on those.
Good indy will be a help. Shoot Martin an email - say Hi for me.

Tlaloc - my LSD is still original as well but how do you know/test that the LSD is still operational and how did you come up with your estimated holding force?

I had my mechanic check it when he did the clutch and lwfw. This was his estimate based on experience with a variety of differentials. I don’t think it was science, more of an estimate by rotating the wheels while
it was up in the air. I was just happy to hear there was anything left at all!

Thanks. I don't think I have much if anything left of mine as well but will have to ask my mechanic his thoughts next time I'm there.

Hi J,
Steering Rack rebuilds $600- $1200 (age-related), once every 15 to 20 years - dependent on the core condition & the quality of the rebuild
Clutch refreshes $1800 - $2500 Once every 60K to 90K miles - some much longer depending on shifting habits
Syncro refresh in the transmission - $1000+ Once every 80K to 120K miles - some much longer depending on shifting habits
Hydraulic lifter adjusting cartridges $600 + labor Once every 12 to 15 years, seems to be age related.

These are some educated guesses, your service life will vary.
Keep in mind Porsche didn't make any of the ancillary components in our cars, for example, the steering rack was made by ZF, and very similar to the same steering rack in almost any car of Europen manufacture from that time. The same goes for the transmission and other major components.
