Post Getting rid of Sunroof to save weight, thoughts please...

Happy New Year, No Work today!! What are my options on replacing the sunroof? Who makes a plug, Steel, Fiberglass, Carbon Fiber, replace the roof completely? Any experiences, sources, thoughts are appreciated...Also what about the interior pieces? Headliner, RS door panels and RS carpet kits? Other obvious ways to pull weight out of the car? Just going to leave AC, everything else is fair game...About to put a custom Chromolly cage in and this is the time to do all the interior and dash lightening...Also any sources or links of RSCS or GT2 factory cages would be great. Thanks as always for the help and I wish the Community best wishes for the New Year!

Glen,
Happy new year to you as well.

You can buy a Carbon Fiber sunroof panel from MA Shaw. DC Lee might also have one since he did the full Monty of removing the roof and replacing it with a non-sunroof version.

I am going down the slippery slope of converting my 993 to RS specs...I have a long way to go, and don't think I will ever get there. So far I have the aero kit and the motor and transmission mounts as well as the LWF and clutch. I just need about $50,000 to complete the job (See below).

The big leap is to get the G50/32 transmission and the 3.8 kit. The G50/32 transmission will set you back about $10,000, maybe more. Then 3.8 kit is another $10,000 in parts + installation, and then, you may not be able to pass local smog tests.

I am thinking that perhaps a US 964 Cup Car is the way to go. It is street legal, it has a 3.6 motor with non-hydraulic valves, the 3.6 could be brought up to 993 HP with some headers, and? It has the completely stripped interior of a 993RS, it has better aerodynamics than a 993 according to Paul Frere, and this is before a RS America tail and a front splitter is added. The only down side, it does not have the 993 LSA rear suspension.

Let's say you pay $70,000 for a US Cup Car, maybe less? Drive it for X years. At the end of the day, you'll still have a very special car, and there will be a market for a car of which there were less than 40 brought into the US.

If you convert your 993 to a true 993RS you have some serious spending to do:
EVO Uprights,
New tie rods,
Big Red Brakes,
Revised rear axel to include the RS camber eccentric,
Era 1995 Coil over suspension with monoballs (Some say the PSS 9 suspension is better),
RS sway bars and drop links,
Replace all rubber (harder compound) on sub frame mounts,
Change out windshield washer resevoir,
Steering connecting brace,
Install 993 Turbo drive shafts,
Add Speedline wheels and new 18" tires,
Delete the sun top,
Add the 3.8 kit,
Add piston spray nozzles from the 993 Turbo,
Change fan and alternator drive,
Change motor mounts,
Change transmission mount,
Get new DME for the 3.8 kit,
Buy G-50/32 tranny,
Replce dual mass with LWF and RS clutch,
Add 993RS Limited Slip,
Replace the shifter,
Replace shifter linkage,
Replace steering wheel (no air bag on RS steering wheel, so keep an eye on your teeth if, heaven forbid, you hit anything),
Replace control arm rubber mounts,
Add aluminum trunk lid,
Add aero kit,
Change out side and rear glass,
Change seat belts,
Add RS seats (spendy!),
Strip interior and replace with RS interior to include door panels,
Remove air conditioning (optional)

I would estimate that the above mods would be over $50,000 to re-create a 993RS or a 993 RS CS. The 993 RS CS would be even more as the aero kit is more expensive, and it has a full roll cage.

In then end, you will have your dream car...please note, it will be extremely difficult to sell this dream machine anywhere near what you have in the car, assuming $40,000 for the car and $50,000 + for the conversion mods. This is the slippery slope yoy may be on...it is a long and expensive trip. But for some, well worth it! For me, I am getting cold feet <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" /> .

Martin,
Glen is more than a little bit of the way down that slippery slope. In fact I would say is just hitting terminal velocity.

For $70K you can get a nice 993 Cup Car.

Do you know if the RS/RSCS had the larger Ring and Pinion that the Turbo's came with? Same final drive ratio but just a larger, sturdier unit. If I ever have to replace mine that is what my mechanic suggested that I upgrade to.
