Default Tire Wear?

While my car was up on a lift getting an oil change, I noticed that my rear tires had uneven wear. There is more wear on the inside of both rear tires (Pirellis).

I am in the process of purchasing new tires BF Goodrich KD's and want to know if I should get an alignment before having the new tires put on?

Is the inside uneven wear a common thing for a 993? IS there something I should be concerned about?

TIA

Hey Keith,

I don't think it would matter if you purchase your tires before or after you get the alignment done. Don't purchase the tires and wait 5-10K before you do your alignment.

I had this problem in Oct., when I noticed the cords hanging off one rear tire and the other one was fine. I had new tires sitting in my kitchen, waiting to go on, but also had planned to replace tie rods and rear toe arms. So I did that job and had the car aligned before I put the new tires on. Alignments are cheap compared to new tires - especially me new 18" Pirellis.

So is an alignment the answer. Or is uneven tire wear a common thing?

I would get the alignment done after you put new tires on. Why get your alignment set perfectly with you old worn tires when things will change once you put the new tires on?

Keith,
These cars are set up up a fair bit of negative camber when they leave the factory. This also increase grip in the rear of the car and makes the car more likely to understeer. If most of your driving is around town or on highways and not a lot of spirited cornering I would look at reducing this a bit. Might help the tires last longer.

Because I have no garage and ordered them from Tirerack. At least the whole house smells good when I order new tires.

I thought I was the only one who likes the smell of new tires. I need new rear tires soon. I think I'm gonna put them in the kitchen as well.

You are not.
As a garageless owner of 46 tires (down from 55 a few weeks ago), I'll tell you, that they all smell different. Hoosiers smell teh sweetest.

I recently replaced my rear control arms because
of excess play.

Before the alignment and tires, you might want
make sure all is well with the suspension.

The rudimentary test that uncovered the problem
on my car was to lift the wheel off the ground and
grab it at 9/3 and 12/6 and try and move it.

I would also suggest that when doing the alignment
if you have 8.8 eccentrics that they be replaced with 10.9's.
Two of mine were badly stripped. The manual talks about
this on 42-13.

I've called a couple of independent shops in my area, both have asked me if I have stock suspension set-up. I have Eibach/Bilstein combo, with this set up they said I might also need corner balancing to get the car right.

BTW...one shop recommended Michelins and the other S03's.

Eccentrics - guys like me and Calvo!
;-)

They are the device that allow adjustment (camber, toe, etc).

There are four on the rear of a 993.

Picture a bolt and washer with the bolt not passing through
the center of the washer. The "washer" is fused to the bolt
so they turn together.

The bolts are pretty beefy (18mm I think) as are the "washers" -
(about 5mm thick and 38mm diameter).

The lower ones are pretty easy pick out from the rear of the car
because they are indexed for 180 degrees with 9 marks.
