Unfortunately forced induction is the best way to extract a healthy torque curve out of these engine. If you combine solid NA flow principles with proper cams and low boost you’ll get a personality that is somewhere between a NA and turbo.
Yep, what "most" folks really want is to feel that shove in the pants.

Agreed that most want/prefer an engine as you describe. I actually do prefer peaky high rpm engines and short gearing. I've had my fair share of forced induction cars as well and they are very fun, but have come to prefer the sound and characteristics of naturally aspirated engines. (even with much less power)

Really I do enjoy my nearly stock 993 and have no plans to chase more power with it myself, just posted this as a general curiosity based on what I have read.

Would seem based on some responses that higher hp 4 valve, dohc air cooled engines already exist which is awesome, but I was unaware of.

Thanks guys!

On the other hand ...
possibilities with a 4.0L

wide torque band and massive power increase
and still room for improvement as this engine is still on stock intake and (modified) Motoronic.

Well done holger! That's what I would call a happy powerband! Look how flat torque is from 4,000 to redline. It's no slouch from 3-4K either. Must be fun, enjoy!

If your dyno operator scaled torque and HP the same it would read much better. It always looks goofy otherwise.

Great info. Any tuner names you care to share? (Besides Gamroth and Rennsport) Thanks
