Doc, What about the park lights and the fogs, specially if you have the litronics or the silverstar head lights, they are so whiter than the park lights and fogs..so they don't look matching?? any tips??
I know that the Fogs are H3, but have no idea whats the designation if the small/tiny park bulbs

Hi Al..!
Where did you find them locally? Today - I tried VIP, Pep Boys, NAPA, Robbins, FAP, and a number of smaller parts stores? The only place that even heard of them was PEP Boys???
Thanks for any leads!

#1157 = dual filament parking + turn light bulb
The correct application in the US is #1157. The #1156 is used in Europe w/a single filament light socket. The side pins on the bulbs are different to prevent installing the wrong bulb, but (obviously) that safeguard doesn't always work.

something is not right, the 1156 is a single filament bulb w/one cantact on the bottom.
the turn signal/parking light bulb on the USA 993 is a 1157 type (dual filament and two contacts on the bottom). one filament is for the running/parking light and the other is the turn signal.
the parking light is dimmer and stays on as the trun signal blinks.
i dont know how yours could have worked as both w/ a 1156 bulb, this is a new twist.
your car is a usa 993 right, you have the cut clears , and you looked @ the old bulb and it has one contact (ala 1156)?
they make the silver stars in 1156 style also

there is a solution to the small marker lights next to the fog light.
there has been a recent thread on this started by me also.
there are @ least four good choices i know of
1) 996 headlight parking light, halogen 6 watt
2) 996 headlight parking light incadescent, 5 watt
3) LED replacement (found @ swap meet)
4) fancy asian import bulb w/bluish tint (no wattage info)
original 993 bulb is 4 watt incadescent
and a poster mentioned a 5th
5) BMW bulb said to be 20+ watts
i have used1,2 and 3 and 4.
one was to bright for my custom back lit headlight "parking lights" (but should be good for standard litronics)
two was to yellow
three was good but gave them to a friend thinking i could find more (still looking)
four is good but bulb is a little to blue when off.
i would use the 996 halogen for most 993's. its a factory part, not to high wattage so as to harm wiring or lens, but brighter and a good color

Cheap alternative: similar thread on other sites suggest a cheap man's version of the Sylvania Silver Star bulbs. Just spray paint (that's right) your amber bulbs silver. Tho' i haven't tried it, others claim the amber light still shines through when lit, and it's the same silver color (when un-lit) as the sylvania's at a fraction of the cost.

Hi Al,
My thanks! I need to pop over to Manchester today - so I may try some of the parts stores there as well. Also, I called Pep Boys locally last night to see if they were getting some in - and they may get a few pairs by this weekend. Also, I've got the dual contact/dual filiment amber bulbs now, so that would be the 1157A ST (thanks Doc!)...
Al - my thanks again for your kind offer..!!! I may take you up on it - or heck - maybe just drive up there and make it a Rennlist Reunion..!!
Best to you!

Dr, you missed one. The 10W available from BMW
1156 will not work. Ask me how I know
It took a lot of swearing to get the bulb out. I had to break the bulb and slowly pull out pieces using needle nose pliers.

I just received the clear unit from Departstop with the 1156 bulbs yesterday. Now I know why the bulbs were so difficult to put in-my ignorance seems endless. I'll have to check the recepticles on the amber units on the car tonight to see if the 1157 bulb recepticle can be transfered to the clear units. I'm sure there will be a way-easy or adapted. At least I'll keep the amber units on until I get it inspected late this afternoon.
Doc-thanks for the great info!
John-hope you are still planning a get together down there later in the Spring cause I'll be there!!

Pull the Euro single filament socket & the 1156 bulbs out of the clear lenses & put them in long term storage - they're not needed. The dual filament socket on the car simply disconnects w/a twist (see your owner's manual) from the oem lens & just as simply connects to the clear lens. It is "plug & play." No adaptation, no rewiring, ... nothing. Take a look & properly align the tabs on the socket & the matching holes in the lens before you try to attach them. BTW, you can also use the oem clear 1157 bulbs in the clear lenses, as I do, if you don't like the amber look at night.

Mike,
I tried the silver paint once. I even used the high temp Rustoleum silver. It smoked when I left the marker lamps on for a few minutes hanging by the side of the car and bubbled up. I use the SilverStar lamps now as the Doc suggested.

Stealth Bulbs
Hey Guys,
I picked up a set of clear bulbs for my bimmer @ stealthauto.com (no affiliation). They go for around $29 a set, but include a lifetime warrenty.
From their site, they make them for the 996 (see pic), so I would assume you could get them for the 993s.

I got a pair of the amber bulbs with silver reflective coating at Pep Boys for about $13. They weren't with the other bulbs, but were with all the ricer neon stuff in the display at the end of an aisle.
Edit: BTW, a complaint of mine about these bulbs is that they're not nearly as bright as the OEM amber bulbs. Maybe that's not the case with other brands but I don't know.
