Mike,

Did you end up with the PPG windshield? I had OEM replaced last year and I am very disappointed in how easily the OEM glass pits. I am going to have it replaced again most likely I will go with Safelight or PPG instead.

How was your install?

Does anyone have a copy of TSB 01/03 released April 2003, "Body - Windshield Replacement Parts/Installation"?

Dave, I think I got OEM glass. I was not really given a choice. But than again, here in MA you can replace them up to 4 times a year for free
Install went pretty easy. One snag was that they had to replace the mirror - the new glass had a different attachment shape. Clair ordered the mirror and I picked it up a few days later.
Interestingly enough, the new glass looks different. There's this... argh, I can't describe it... dotted dark area above the mirror. And the antenna is visible, an imbedded wire going straignt down the middle of windshield. Doesn't bother me at all, just different.

Mike,

You have described the OEM glass I had installed last spring. Damn resurfacing in Rte 495 sand blasted my new glass. Aargh! I am going with either PPG or Safelite next time.

Jason,

Maybe someone with a access to AllData could research the TSB. My subscription lapsed last fall.

What about the teflon rope kit? I am having my windshield replaced soon and was wondering if this kit should be installed at the same time. I have had no squeaking, but then again, mine only has 9K on the clock. Also, I seem to have read that the kit actually addresses the problem on the 996, not specifically the 993.

Had mine replaced by Safelite in 1999. Installed a OE Sigla. No problems, altho the softer glass than in US-built cars is more prone to be sandblasted. Shop did a nice job; absolutely no squeaks, water leaks, or problems with delamination.

Thanks Ray,

I did not realize that Safelite also installed Sigla glass. I have the Sigla glass now and I will switch to a harder American glass next time.

Hal,

Mine was replaced by Callas Rennsport in Torrance. They replaced everything using factory parts and did an excellent job. Also, the stated $1100 dealer cost for the parts seems to be substantially higher than what I think that I paid.

I could be wrong here, but I find it HIGHLY unlikely that the glass provides any structural support. Glass doesn't do that. I'd think a dealer could come up with some excuse better than that .

BTW, I was told by Safelite last fall that they no longer have non-OEM glass available. They scrounged around for me and found one, at half the price of the softer OEM glass.
