Hmm...I smell snake oil. The 3.8l RS has around 300hp, a 28hp over the pre-varioram 3.6l. According to the ad, the chip adds 20hp but somehow rather, I doubt that the .2l only contributed 8 more hps. The math just doesn't make sense. I'm sure if such a chip existed (for less than $600 vs. the megabucks Motec system), all us '95 folks would be jumping all over it!

Perhaps the chip guru, aka Steve Weiner, can "chip" in? (sorry, couldn't resist!)

I would be very uncomfortable putting a Chip in my car unless I was sure for its "pedigree" and how it handled the rev limiter and such.

I dunno. The guy seem legitimate. If you look at his feedback, he's sold another chip like that for 964 and we can simply email the buyer to ask what he thought.
Also, the guy is in Boston and I have a nagging suspision that I know who it is - he sells engines on Pelican board and seem to be pretty legit.

Chips can be really easily copied.. (dont ask me how I know) it's most likely a decent chip that has been copied, it may even be a P-Motorsport chip..

I too was curious - especially when the price was at $70. Seems pretty legit, but I'm not willing to jack with my motor. I'm going to stick with Steve Weiner..

I wrote to the seller and this is what he said:

hello.
the euro 993 RS chip was done by a german tuner. they took a 3.8 euro RS and retuned it for a 3.6 car. they dyno'd and tweeked the 3.8 and kept the timing curve, and fuel character of the 3.8 and just fit it to the 3.6.
You may have seen a couple around, in the german market, and they did do some for 3.6 964, but it is different, and not interchanable, i think they made one for 3.2 clubsport also.
I bought a euro RS dme that had it installed, i bought it for $600+ the $600 chip for 50% off, so i paid $300 for it.
i'm open for offers. i got some offers but no payers yet.
thank you

Then I accidentally asked him a question that I was intending to ask to the 964 chip buyer, and this is what I got:

hello,
well here is the short version.
I have a 1991 C2, with a blown engine 964, i rebuilt it and got the chip you saw for the 964, it worked excellent, then i got a deal to buy a 993 engine, so i sold my 964 engine
and installed the 993. i liked it so much, i bought 2 euro 993 RS dme's with this chip.
i figured someone else would love to get their hands on this. but that just me.
I think they also make one for 3.2. the picture is the same one i got from the shop over in germany this is the one they display. so you might see it around.
i haven't run it yet, but i have one for 964 to list one day.
so i'm not sure....which are you looking for ??? 993 or 964 ???
i have 2 993 ,one in my car and one for sale, and 1, 964 just collecting dust.
I'm open for offers if you have interest.
what year is your car ? and where are you located ?
thank you

If I could "chip in" here a moment,...(I've always wanted to say that)

The Euro RS ECU is a .677 box and it ONLY works with a 3.6 Varioram, non-OBD-II car.

The software is indigenous to that model only.

Its hard to know what that chip for sale is as I have a new RS DME sitting right here on my desk at the moment and that chip on E-Bay certainly not a Factory one.

IMHO, without knowing who made it, its a Caveat Emptor kind of situation.

There is a LOT more to this subject than meets the eye and one should always be absolutely positive about what parameters are in any chip you buy (new or used). You need to know the rev limiter cut-off RPM and whether its compatible with the fuel grades in your area.

See the things you learn from the chip guru!

I've seen a blown engine from a "chipped" 993 because the fuel-air mixture was all off (running too lean). Pretty impressive damage with tons of metal shavings from the broken pieces. The engine block, however, appeared undamaged, a testament to its strength. Oh, and he's now running a stock configuration in his "pre-owned" engine while rebuilding the other.

Perhaps the owner of that engine (who I know lurks around here ) can add his two cents!

Current bid is $300????

Steve W. Are you saying a 1995 non varioram 993 cannot be chipped with a 3.6 RS chip??

I am guessing that maybe you cannot grab a chip out of a euro RS ECU and pop it into a US 1995 OBD1 ECU with improved results with good gasoline?

HELP??

Steve:

The Euro 993 3.8 RS is a Varioram engine and the US '95 993 engine is of course, not.

The software is very different so a chip from the Euro RS (.677 DME) will not run a '95 non-Varioram engine.

Now, quite obviously I cannot tell you if that custom chip offered for sale on E-Bay will run in your car since only the seller of that presumably knows, for sure.

One should be sure that any offered chip for a '95 USA car should properly start & run a .163, .674, and .675 ECU.

I hope this clarifies things a bit.
