Question Tyre choice - Avon tyres any good?

Hi Everyone,

My car has nearly new Avons on the back and Continentals on the front. I'm going to change the front tyres, probably to Pirellis. Can I leave the rears for a while and say change them when they have worn a bit more? It seems a shame to scrap them when they are virtually new. Alternatively should I get a set of Avons for the front?

Thanks,

David

Don't get Avons for the front!
By all means use the tyres you've got now and replace the fronts with what you intend to put on the back next time.

If you have a look at the thread about Conti Sport N2's you'll see what experiences i've gained. I didn't even include Avons because i've had them on cars and bikes before and they're .... errr.... not very good. They make reasonable Range Rover tyres though! Soft road rather than on or off road.

Hope this helps.

This has come up several times before. The consensus opinion has consistently been to match all 4 of your tires. There are several archived threads. Here's an excerpt from my post in one:

Life is unpredictable - your car's handling/braking shouldn't be.

Tires are a very small portion of the cost of car ownership, but IMO the most important safety area. When all is said & done, every aspect of your car's performance is limited by those 4 relatively tiny contact patches. Get the best rubber you can afford - matched at all 4 corners.

Dave,

Check out the prices at Micheldever tires.
Also I have been purchasing tyres at the Tyre place at Pinner opposite Lidl, (very good prices). Check them out too.

Have you got your car back yet.

Unhappy

Hi Bins,

Thanks for the tip. Insurers inspected and approved the work on Thursday, parts ordered Friday and the start work this week so a couple of weeks. I can't wait!

Cheers,

David
