Default AC question

Hi Rennlister,
My question:
Can the AC expansion valve be replaced without removing the gas tank or the HVAC briefcase in the frunk?
It seems to be on top just under the cowl.
Thanks,
Andy

Yes, it is very doable. You just need to remove the firewall. In the Pelican writeup, look at 'Figure 18' - it shows it most clearly. At that point the expansion valve is accessible and will be held in by a single two bolts. You will want to loosen any brackets that hold the AC lines so you don't bend them when replacing the expansion valve.

Thanks for the speedy reply,
Looking at the below picture from Pelican Parts, it looks like it is right under the servomotor bracket and can be gotten to with the firewall in place by removing the bracket.
Am I missing something here?

My experience is that the metal firewall has to come out. I don't think you will have enough clearance to fully back the bolts out without running into the firewall. When I was chasing A/C leaks here I did not think to take the servo bracket off though.

It is worth a try Andy, i dont think it will take that much more time to attempt it. You would need a M5 allen key and possibly a small cheater bar to break it loose. I dont think you have enough clearance to get a ratchet and m5 socket in there. If you look at pic20 , the ratchet is basically past the line of the firewall when the bolts are fully recessed in the expansion valve.
