Post DE Fire extinguisher - what to buy? where?

What is the minimum required fire extinguisher for DE events? Where is the best place (cheapest?) to order both unit and the required mounts?
thanks,
=r

Rob,

I got a halon 2.5lb extinguisher and mount from OG Racing in Virginia. Their web site is www.ogracing.com (no affiliation, etc).

Rob,

Definitely get Halon, even though it will cost more. With any luck, you won't ever have to use it. But if you ever have to, Halon won't muck up the entire area like DryChem will. Just for refernece, one day I happened to be in the right place at the right time and helped a motorist on the road who was trying to put out the beginnings of an engine fire with a Super Big Gulp!!! I yanked out my small Halon canister, put it out, and saw no evidence of the Halon in the engine compartment. At least I know it works well, butI hope I'll never have to use it again

Has anyone actually found Ray's post? I did a search using the key word "fire" and user 337 - I came up with a number of refernces that say search for the post but I can't find it.

Ray, I know you've done it once before, but could you re-post your picture and information?

I'm also trying to decide what to do with the extinguisher to put it in a place that passes inspection. I have the BK seat mount which isn't really in reach drom the drivers seat and it restricts seat use quite a bit (between it and the roll bar behind, the passenger seat has almost no movement. While I could mount it to the horizontal support of the roll bar, this really isn't in easy reach either. A tunnnel mount would be best, but where to get the mount and what has worked for others is what Id like to know.

This is where Ray's post was. Unfortunately, when John upgraded the board, many of the old URL posts were lost.
As I recall, Ray used a removable homemade bracket attached to the rear seat belt bolts & tried out his new digital camera for the post. You'll need to cajole him into reposting.

Angry

They deleted it? DANG!!!!!! Why do they delete all the high quality stuff and keep the garbage?????

OK, I don't have the complete post but here's some dopey pictures to give you an idea. I bought the galvanized steel bar and the mounting bolts (PS - they're SAE!!!!) at a local hardware store. Then I bent the bar into a stretched "U" to mount across the tunnel between the rear seats. The inner seat belt buckles were removed and replaced with hex bolts (I forget the size; bring the OE bolts with you and match the threads). Don't be fooled by the picture; the fire extinguisher bracket replaces the belt buckles. The fire extinguisher then mounts on top of this bracket.

The spacers are cut off a length of pipe; these act as spacers between the tunnel seat belt threaded mounts and the face of the carpeting (you'd be surprised by the thickness of the carpeting and underlying sound/thermal insulation). The bracket actually rests on these spacers. Voila - a total metal-to-metal mount (as most schools require) easily accessible by the driver or passenger.

Pops,

That's because your homemade, U-shaped mount is not pretty enough for us fashion-oriented yung-ins. Maybe, if you had powder coated it, or covered it in leather or carbon fiber, you would have gotten a better response.

You comin' to the 2nd annual meeting of yer own Fan Club this September? We need a group pic with our reason-for-existence in it.

Oh yeah, "Thank you".

Rob,
I bought a halon unit from TrueChoice for my RX-7, product ID "PAH2.5" ($110), and mounted the bracket that came with it to my harness bar.

For the 993 I wanted a more sanitary appearance, so I went with a Safecraft bottle (PB2R), billet mount, and the Brey-Krause mount which attaches to the factory seat hardware (R-2015 + R-9501). A more expensive solution but prettier.

I second the recommendation for halon, if you ever need to use the agent there will be no cleanup afterwards.

FWIW the DE events I have attended don't require a fire bottle, but I want one anyway!

My first post at Rennlist...hope it helps.
