Post Protomotive low boost turbo for 993?

Hello,

I've been looking into aftermarket turbochargers for my 993 and I was wondering if anybody has any first-hand information on the Protomotive aftermarket twin turbo kit? I'm getting used to the normally aspirated engine and would like a bit more punch, especially when some of the newer cars out there are edging up to the 993's HP (i.e. Murano/FX45 SUV w/ 255HP, Honda Accord V6 w/ 240HP ... etc).

I checked the archives and there's one mention of this. I called Protomotive and got a good run down on what they offer. Pretty impressive, but not inexpensive ($12K just for parts alone). It's a direct bolt-on kit and is a twin turbo vs. a single turbo. The turbos mount close to the wheel wells where there's supposedly better cooling and the turbos are bigger than the ones in the stock TT's.

System runs something like .46 bar (~6PSI which is about half of the stock TT's boost) so is low pressure, but the dyno charts indicate ~ 400 HP. Of course your running the 6PSI @ 11:1 stock compression which is a bit high. System has an intercooler, a big one, but still that's a lot of PSI for 11:1 compression pistons.

There's one fellow here in San Jose who has had the stage 1 on his 993 narrow body and just recently had it modified to stage 2 (> 500HP). I called him and we talked a bit about his setup. Seems very reliable. The owner's put on 60K miles since the turbo install and no major problems.

Anyone else has experiences w/ Protomotive? I believe that they have a subsidiary on the east coast and have done a number of installs there as well.

Thanks,

*****

Wilber on the 996 board has a heavily modified 996TT that was done by Todd Knighton at Protomotive. You may want to PM him for his thoughts.

I've also considered Protomotive's stage 2, and also TPC's supercharger kits, in addition to thinking about doing a 993TT motor/ECU swap. I concluded that by the time you have everything sorted and balanced out, a 993TT would be cheaper. Still, I'd be interested to hear how things go if you decide to do this...keep up posted.

Prototech (Protomotive's FL brother)takes care of my 930. A friend of mine has their stage one and tracks it often. The engine seems to be bullit proof, and he's faster then any 993TT out there. With the high compression, there's no waiting for the boost, and he's just so much faster on the track then me. Exiting turns he is on full power, while I'm sometimes just waiting for the turbo to spool up (especially in the slower turns). Even though my track HP is about the same as his (about 425HP at 0.9 bar), I can't compete with him. At 1.2 bar I'm at 500HP and on the street this would beat him, but I can't and/or won't run that much boost on the track. If you decide to go with them, and track the car, my only suggestion would be to add the additional oil cooler, since my friend's car would run a little hot in FL after 30 DE minutes. This went away after adding the front cooler, and was not neccessary for the street.

Todd is brilliant when it comes to turbo Porsches. Before he move to CA he built my friends radical 930TT. To keep from starting a controversy I will not mention the HP, but if you have been to his shop you will know what I mean. I have yet to meat anyone that knows there sh*t like he does. I just wish he was still in FL

Kristoffer:
Do you know where in CA Todd is located? Does he have a shop out in CA? I have a 993TT and would enjoy talking to him about some upcoming HP mods.
Thanks!

Thanks for all the replies. Good information regarding existing customers and their experiences.

My rough calculations indicate that it's going to be more economical to get a TT kit than trade/sell my existing car and then buy a TT. There's way too much overhead as well risk in getting a new TT. I know for sure my car's never been in an accident and the service history of my car. If I buy a TT then I'm going to be starting from scratch and you never know what you'll end up w/. Resale may suffer, but I'm not inclined to sell this car anyways.

Jeffry,

I believe Todd's shop is in Riverside, east of Los Angeles on 15.

He's got modifications for TT's. When I talked to him he said that he basically puts the normally aspirated heads back on the TT's (i.e. twin plugs instead of single) and quite a few other things I can't remember. He actually said that the normally aspirated cars have better baseline engines for his higher stage modifications and that the TT's get his version of the TT system (i.e. the stock turbo stuff is stripped and his system is used). He uses bigger turbos and there's better higher end HP compared to stock TT's.

You should call him and spend some time talking to him. I chewed up half an hour of his time without even trying.

I was most concerned about longevity of the aftermarket kit, especially with stock high compression pistons.

When I did the reference check of the 993 owner up in San Jose, he said that there were some driveability issues at low speed. It seems the car sometimes can't idle smoothly and surges, almost like it wants to go fast. Can't put a good car down I guess :-). The owner put 60K miles on the turbo system. That's a lot of miles. It didn't seem like the owner tracked the car though.

Jeffry -

Protomotive is in Winchester which is southeast Orange County and I think close to north San Diego County. Todd and Cynthia's number is 909 926 2694 and website is:

http://www.netquest.net/~knighton/

A Protomotive-modified 993 will supposedly outperform the factory 993TT, espcially if the car is RWD given the weight savings. Let us know how you make out - I may revisit this mod if I can't find the right 993TT.

Kristoffer,

Prototech is still in Ft.Lauderdale, and David Hart runs that shop. I've never had the pleasure of meeting Todd, but he and David work together very closely, and I've seen some of the monsters that David has created. David also did a 993 that had the standing 1 mile world record.
