Default Over run

My car occasioanally suffers over run when you switch off the engine.

My mechanic tells me this is normal, i wonder if it is, what dose everyone else think?

It's never happened to my car, either. Check the archives and see what comes up.

Good luck.

I can't imagine how your car keeps running after the switch is off, unless you have leaky injectors or oil is getting into the combustion chamber.

I would have to agree with everyone above, this is absolutely not "normal" for an unmodified 993.

Someone mentioned that it could be my timing.

Timing is a possibility. The gas is definitely still there to ignite (postignition) and it is getting a spark from somewhere, I'd put it on a hammer and see what's up.

Only other question is have you changed the type of gas-pardon me petrol-that you are using lately?

I only use super unleaded 98 RON, usually from BP but sometimes from Shell.

Perhaps I should give a better descrition of what happens, the car sometimes turns over one or twice and the whole car rocks when I turn the ignition off, this I am told is, over run.

I have had both the harness and the distributer caps changed recently and it has been much better, but did it yesterday.

It also doesn't always like to start easily.

Assuming the electrics are functioning normally - and that might not be a good assumption in this case - timing should not be a contributor, because there should be no spark after ignition is switched off. Fuel type should not be a factor since there should be no fuel either, since the injectors would no longer be firing (unlike a carbureted car which keeps supplying fuel as long as the engine is turning and air is being pumped through it).

Greg has a good point - a failing wiring harness can account for many otherwise difficult to explain phenomena.

I have never experienced a run-on with my 98 and as others have suggested, I don't believe this is normal at all!

Perhaps time for a new mechanic?

Good luck - and keep us posted.
