Default 993 3.8, factory spec?

Hi guys,

I just come across a 993 3.8 with a claimed 285hp According to the salesman this is a factory option. However I can't find any record of such a factory option.

Does anybody know if there was such an option and if so what the option code was/is?

thanks for the help

regards

Yes it was an option.

The 3.8 engine was the 993 RS engine but could be ordered as a factory option on any standard 993. Rated at about 300 bhp.

I don't know the option code though.

285hp is the standard spec (DIN) for the 3.6L Varioram cars. I believe the 3.8L was std on the RS and was an option on the widebody cars (Carrera S and 4S) in RoW (was it really optional on narrow cars too?).

No offense to any salesmen on the board (well none intended anyway), but I wouldn't rely on his word. The 3.8 option is a very expensive option, and should certainly be documented somewhere. Get the VIN and see if you can get the options that the car was delivered with. I think the dealer can help you with this.

Then you can check the options against the list at http://p-car.com/technical/option.html .

If it was an after delivery install, you'd want to see about $15k worth of recipts for the job. (I'm probably waaay off on this -- KIm?)

Get it in writing!!!

Gert has the 3.8 conversion kit on his site for around €10k so $15k to cover purchase and installation is about right.

A lot of money for 15bhp.

Ian, I like your taste in cars -- you're the 3rd Morgan-owning rennlister that I know of!

Sorry, everyone, for the OT comment; there are few Morgans around, so I tend to get excited when one turns up.

Just found the answer, and it is in the Red Book, so I must have overlooked it!

Anyway the 3.8 factory option is indeed the RS engine, but then slightly de-tuned to 285hp while still producing the same torque. Engine designation is: M64/05S.

Sounds interesting, will go and have a closer look at the car!

thanks for your replies!

Joris,
I'd love to know if the car really had that option. Please let us know what you find when you see the car.
