Post No more octane issues?

Hey all, a friend of mine found this on many other forums and lists about boosting octane with Toulene/Xylene and was wondering if this could cure all our octane problems, especially for those on the west coast. Does anyone know the long-term effects of such additives? Here's the link Toulene

I've heard of people using Propane for nitrous applications and people have been using this mix on the "Ford Lightning and Buick" list with much success. I just wonder what color the spark plugs will be after extended use!

Anyone tried this? We still have 93-94 octane here in the tri-state area but was curious so that maybe we can run a more aggressive "Steve Weiner" race chip in our cars on the street

Just wanted to share and hope this helps. FYI, I did try it on my friends Escort and Sentra beater cars and with a 1 gallon Toulene and 12 Gallon 92 Octane mix, the cars definitely felt peppier in the butt dyno but its probably just psychological!

Kind regards,

Hi Vinnie:

While I admire anyones's quest for more power, I would offer caution about using compounds such as Toluene, Zylene, Aniline, and other things that do raise the octane rating of motor fuels.

Three issues here:

1) These chemicals attack and severely weaken the elastomers in the fuel system. All but Viton is subject to these problems and I would not use any of these products except in an emergency. I define an "emergency" as accidently getting fuel lower than 91 octane.

2) Its VERY tough to get an even, homogenous mixture in the car's fuel tank. Every tankfull will be different and one big reason to use unleaded race gas is the sheer consistency of how the car will run!

3) These compounds are very toxic; are considered carcinogens, and are absorbed through the skin as readily as DMSO and others. One deadly thing they do is attach themselves to the hemoglobin in the blood and block its ability to carry oxygen to the tissues. This effect is permanent and cumulative. One should use neoprene gloves and exercise extreme caution if you elect to use these things.

Caveat Emptor,..........

Thanks Steve! Now where can I get some Viton? I guess there's ALWAYS a trade off.

Cheers,
