Help with clutch problem
I have a 1996 993 C2 with about 46,000 miles on it. I noticed a strange rattling noise a couple of weeks ago, the noise stops when the clutch is depressed and the pedal pulsates when depressed about one inch. I have been told by a local and reputable shop that the dual mass is probably broken, but it may only be a clutch issue as well.
Anyone have any similar experiences? Is $2800 a reasonable qote for a clutch replacement?, another $1100 for the dual mass? Also if anyone has recommendations on a shop in Indy or Chicago it would be most appreciated. Thanks, Dave

Like Argo1 said, do the LWF upgrade if you have to replace the clutch or or dual mass flywheel. I just did it on my /96 C2 and it really gives the car more "pep". The cost of the parts and labor was right around $2,000.
The shop that I spoke with was very much against the LW flywheel because of idling probems and loss of torque. I have read the archives about the adjustment to the ISV fixing the idling. Any one notice a difference in torque? Any before and after dyno numbers? Are folks purchasing OEM parts for this little mod?
David,
I had the RS flywheel/clutch installed in my '96 last year. The car did have problems idling and consistantly stalled, but only for about 15 minutes of driving, then everything was fine.
One of the more experienced can chime in here, but I believe the DME in our cars compensates for the changes and evens out the idle. 95 cars seem to have more of an issue.
This is a change I would recommend. Car revs much more freely and feels more peppy. You do have to be more careful on takeoffs from a stop and there is a bit more mechanical noise (which I personally enjoy!).
Best of luck!

I have had my LWF in for a couple months and have not had any problem with the idle. I am guessing that Viperbob must be busy in his garage or I am sure he would have chimed in by now. Seriously David, Viperbob can answer all of your questions in reguards to the LWF and he happens to be a good source for the parts as well.
