Smile I DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I bought the 95 993 C2. Black with Gray Leather Int. (See my other post for details)!

In summary:

1. Called on a silver coupe listed at a dealer in Boca Raton for $42,900. Sold. The sales people were in a meeting so they put the owner on the line. I asked if they had any others, he checked and a black/grey 95 993 C2 was just traded in. 54K miles. Price: $33,900. Not wanting to do back-flips on the phone, I told him to fax me a buyers order and that I would buy it pending PPI.

2. A fax came in later that said $39,900 for the car. I was not a happy camper. A night went by. I posted here. I got some good advise.

3. This AM I called back and went round and round about the price all day. Net result: $35,000 out the door. They had apparently quoted me what they paid for the trade in. They should have never told me that since I used that to get the best price I could.

4. I called an authorized P-car mechanic that happened to be about 5 miles away. I had them go pick up the car for me and paid $85 via credit card for PPI and body inspection.

5. Here's what they found:

a. The motor for the rear wing makes a loud noise when activated.
b. The drivers seat twists when activated for back and forth selection.
c. The fan speed selector button was missing.
d. The battery was not holding a charge. Apparently the prev. owner had an Alpine Head unit installed with a CD-Changer and it was not wired to the battery correctly. Also has an EQ behind the head unit. It has a DSP box in the drivers door (what is this?)
e. Car has never been wrecked or had any body work done.
f. Compression is perfect. Everything works. The windshield has some foggyness? (didn't understand or see this on the car) in the right hand corner. He said it was common and that sometimes the rear window will just explode!? What the??
g. Clutch is fine. He said without really taking some stuff apart it would be tough to see the condition, but at 54K miles I would need to replace it in the next 10K -15k anyway. (Is this correct?)

So in getting a big thumbs up I drove down and got there around 5:30PM. The car is beautiful!! I mean major SCHWING!! The 18" turbo wheels really set it off. It also has a Motorsound intake option. What is that? Sounds nice! Stainless exhaust looks aftermarket. I didn't get a chance to carefully look through all the paperwork, but I will.

So anyway, they told me the reason the car had those problems found was that it had not been serviced yet before I called about it and was not yet in inventory. So later, when I asked them to fix this stuff and still sell it for $35,000 they thought I was crazy. I reminded them that they would have fixed everything anyway before they had sold it. Bottom line they would have made more money if the owner had not told me about the newly traded car. It would have sold for about $42-$44K (they say) after servicing it etc. I'm glad I stuck to my guns, because I think I got a wonderful car for a great price. We'll see. Since I drove down by myself, I had planned on driving the 993 back to Melbourne Beach (2 1/2 hours north of Boca) and picking up my other car later. Instead I had them pay for it to be delivered to my house via flatbed due to the "problems" the car had that they failed to inform me about. They agreed.

I'm going out of town this weekend to visit a friend in St. Louis. It's going to be a long weekend. They are delivering the car on Monday! I've never wished it to be Monday before!!

I will take some pics and post them soon. It is such a wonderful looking car!!

On a side note. I'm really glad I didn't get a 996. The sales guy took me to the mechanic's shop in a 2000 996 cab and he parked right behind the 993 that was on the lift at the shop door. After the mechanic showed me the car from the bottom-up, he lowered it down and I could easily compare the body styles side by side. The 993 is just such an aggressive looking car. The 996 is OK, but just tame in comparison. Am I crazy? How can an OLDER design look better? Plus the driving! It is SOOO tight. The 996 feels more like my BMW 5 series than a sports car!! I will be looking for excuses to go on errands. Maybe when I go grocery shopping I'll buy one item at a time so I can keep driving back and forth!!

Thanks to everyone that helped me with this. I look forward to contributing to this board. (Mostly learning right now though!!)

OK this is a long post, but last item: Where in Florida (Central would be best) can I go to track my car?? What is required besides a helmet? Not thinking of racing (yet!). I just want to open her up and see what she can do without getting a ticket!

TIA

Sean

Congratulations on purchasing your C2. What a long weekend this will be for you. I too have a C2 and love it to bits.

BTW all 993 tail motors sound like coffee grinders so don't worry about that.

Regards

Congratulations sounds nice with a capital N.

My tail motor is very quiet, but it is a common problem. Nothing some very healthy lubrication will not sort out.

Happy Motoring

CONGRATS!

I think you got a fair deal. Based on my recent search for a 993, I felt that your pricing was appropriate or maybe a good fair price but not one that was questionably low. I am not someone who happened to have a 993; rather, I specifically looked for one the last 3 months or so. I guess I found that the high posted prices were never really transactional prices except in anecdotal cases. But we, as enthusiasts, and owners of 993 cars, like to believe the highest benchmark price I guess. So, your price does not surprise me at all. I made bids on late model 993s in the $50s for 25 plus K mile cars which were rejected by dealers only to have them call me back sometimes. They ended up sellling the cars in auctions for less. Of course these were 98 or 97 C4S cars. And by the time they were ready to part with their cars, I had found mine as I upped by budget and found a private seller on a TT.

I think you lucked out with the options - few that I saw had all the options that you have - sport susp, motorsound, DSP, hifi too I guess. About the only option that is very desirable in used 993 cars that you dont have is the sport seat option. A very nicely optioned car.

As regards your concerns, I would just compare the oudness of the noise from your car to someone else's car. I wouldn't worry about the other issues too much. I dont even know about the fan speed selector switch as yet!! Next on my agenda.

Best of luck with the car. Have fun.

Congratulations on your purchase and on
negotiating what seems like a reasonable deal!

The windshield in my '96 targa showed signs of fogging in the lower passenger-side corner. This was diagnosed as a delamination of the glass and the windshield was replaced at the selling dealer's expense.

Yes, the rear windows of wide-body 993s (2S, 4S) occasionally implode

Sean - congratulations on your purchase. You'll love the car.

The Motorsound option includes a drilled, chromed inlet airbox (increased induction noise) & slightly less restrictive mufflers, yielding a deeper, throatier (& IMO) much nicer sound. No power increase, but it sure sounds stronger.

As Tim noted, the spontaneously shattering rear glass more often occurred w/wide bodies, but narrow bodies have not been immune. I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

Make sure the replacement battery is properly vented (there is a vent tube that attaches to the battery). My replacement was an Interstate MT-91 which fits perfectly, is widely available & has performed well.

Bookmark Robin Sun's site - p-car.com - for a wealth of DIY & other info.

Last, if you'd like to get a head start on your ownership experience or have questions, give me a call when you're in St. Louis - I may even let you wash & wax my black/black '96 coupe for practice

Sean,

One question - does the car have all of it's maintainence records? If not - do some investigating over the phone to get copies of transactions...dealers are ususally willing to do this for new owners of used p-cars. Good cars have good records.

Congrats! You'll love the car, and yes, you will buy groceries one at a time...grin.

I sent you a private e-mail in response to your first post pointing to a list of common 993 problems, but maybe you didn't receive it:
http://www.haphazard.com/993kb/

The windshield fogginess (it starts in the bottom corners usually, especially after rain or in humid weather) is most definitely a common problem, and you'll want to make sure they replace that window. It will just get worse over time - especially if you're in a humid/wet area.

The rear window exploding, as others have noted, seems to have pretty much tapered off, so you're probably safe there.

Congrats!

For tracking your car, check out the PCA. I think you're in the "Space Coast" region. The website http:\\www.pca.org will get you there. Also check out http:\\www.trackschedule.com. I'm doing a DE in Sebring this weekend through an organization called NASA (National Auto Sport Assoc.). Their Florida website is http:\\www.NASAFL.org. The BMW folks also seem to do a lot of track events at Sebring.

Other events at Roebling Road in Savannah and Road Atlanta.

Have fun!

Dan in St. Louis. Sorry. I had already left out of town before I got your post. St. Louis was great. HOT!! I thought Florida was hot!!

Anyway, the Cardinal won for a change!

Yes, the car has all the papers. I called today to see when they will be delivering it up to me. They found an oil hose leaking and replaced it. He said it was $500 but who knows. Seat is fixed. Fan switch **** replaced. It was the radio wired incorrectly that was the cause of the battery draining. This has been repaired. Oil changed, tires balanced and front aligned.

Should be good to go!

Thanks for the post on the PCA Space Coast chapter. I will be sending them an email later today for an application to join.

Right now I just really want my car!!

Sean,

Congratulations and welcome! By your obvious and infectious enthusiasm, I can tell that you've landed in the right place.

I've always thought black is a beautiful color that really compliments the lines of the 993. Get that elbow grease ready!

Congrats on your purchase! And that was good you stuck to your guns on the car as well! I too had got a sweet deal on my car (originally listed for $42K but dropped to $35K + CA tax). I have a very similar color as yours, black/black with the 18" hollow turbo twists. Yes it is sweet with that combo and rim. Also the motorsound option is cool too, which I alo have. I have had my car for about 3 weeks now and I still get goosebumps everytime I walk into the garage!
