Oil Temp Question
Can anyone tell me what oil temperature the ticks on the Oil temp gauge corespond to. e.g. :
Lowest Tick ~100F
Next Tick ~130F
etc...
I used to think I knew, from prior 911s, but I'm not sure I'm right on my 993.
Thanks!

Do you know what the temp would be just as it entered the red zone. Fortunately I have never seen that, I am just curious.

My sincere apologies. I missed one of the notches in my original post:
First notch: 0
Second notch: 50 C - 122 F
Third notch: 90 C - 194 F
Fourth notch: 120 C - 248 F
Fifth notch: 150 C - 302 F

EJ,
I am pretty sure the temperature gague in the dash is displaying information from the temperature sensor located right next to the oil pressure sensor sending unit on the right side crank case.
There is also a temperature sensor on the cylinder head, but I don't think that is the reading you are getting on the oil temperature gauge, and also there is a sensor on the oil cooler up front, but again that is not the reading you are looking at.

Although I don't know the exact location, I doubt that it is at the oil cooler. It should be somewhere on the crankcase. Hopefully, Robin or someone will tell us the exact location.

Thank you gents. Robin, you say that there are two other temp sensors that don't affect the gauge right? Here comes the dumb question: wht are they doing then? Measuring for the DME? That is all I can think of?

Sean,
Cylinder head temp. sensor is for the engine control unit( mixture@ specific temp.). Temp. sensor on oilcooler turns on oilcooler fan via a resistor to give two different speeds.
Third temp. sensor is for your oil temp. gauge, located on right side of engine.
Pete.

ON a
-- hot and humid day,
-- with ac on high,
-- and in stop and go traffic,
what should one expect in a 993 or a 993TT if the TT is different in this regard.
Will the temperature that shows up in about 5 to 10 minutes of driving (when it climbs a bit to say the 9 o clock position), continue to keep rising? I've never had to encounter more than 10 minutes when all of the above conditions existed but was curious as regards what I should expect as normal.
Also, in such conditions will one ever see it rise to the 10 o clock notch (4th notch or 120 C if I am interpreting Viken's information correctly).
BTW, in speed it seems to be at the third notch (8 o clock position or 8:30 position / 90 C to 95 C maybe or just a tad higher once in a while) regardless of other conditions. Lower range on cooler days I guess.
Thanks.

Ran,
The temperature gauge right at 9 o'clock is where mine stays (pretty much) at during hot days in stop and go traffic and with the A/C on.

Ran,
Under the conditions you described, mine is between 9 and 10 o'clock. It rises from the normal highway 8 o'clock to stop-and-go A/C on 9 o'clock in less than 5 minutes. It keeps rising until it reaches 10 o'clock and then it stops. The worst I experienced so far was just past the 4th notch.
