They are built like a rock and insanely reliable. My first car was a 1982 300D. A few other friends also had D and SD models.

I would say its laughably slow tho..... I was messing around with mine once and it did an amazing 0-60 in 15 seconds LOL.

vtacv,

Those early 80s 300 SD s were a topic pf discussion over in the CompuServe "Cars" forum years ago. They are said to be some of the most reliable, bulletproof cars ever built. And that's when a Mercedes was truly well made. I don't see how you can go wrong as the price will probably be right too.

Slow, yes, but reliable. It will do 103 top end. I am the original owner of a 1982 300TD wagon. Family hauler, survived 3 teenagers as first car, now the Home Depot hauler. Never touched the engine in 243K miles, though it did get a new tranny at about 190K.

Solid as a rock. Better than a Chevy though.

500K built in. Good qual cars. you won't regret it.

v-Tach - great post, great timing. I've been trolling for a 300D wagon, but the only ones I can find are in really poor condition, and would need considerable $$$ to bring the interior and paint up to spec.

It's a very very cool car, totally anti-trend, and if I buy one, I'll smoke a cigar and listen to Cuban jazz everywhere I go.

Let us know what you decide, I'd love to know how you do...

thanks guys!
i had it checked out by a mechanic - he was ready to close so did not put the car on a lift but he did drive the car. it will need a few things - tire rod, new shocks. tranny is not in best shape but should last a while if i dont beat it. the mechainic said if the owner is willing to work with me in price its a good car. the owner is asking $3000.00
there were a few other things i noticed the ac does not blow cold but the owner say he converted to the new ac just needs a charge and the driver side door clicks kinda like my 993 did - hope the fix is not as expensive. the front seats sag a bit... i cant believe how clean this interior looks.. the leather looks brand new not one rip. the dash board not one crack. i wonder how much it would be to put some new foam in the front seats to help the sagging??
thanks again

"ac does not blow cold but the owner say he converted to the new ac just needs a charge"

Not sure I would believe this if he can't demo it blowing cold. It is an expensive conversion, I think, and I did not bother. I just don't need much a/c to drive 10 minutes each way to HD.
