Default Selling Car to Individual in Canada

Hello,
Need some information from anyone who has sold their P-car to anyone in Canada? Buyer wants me to provide an EIN (SSN) number that the transport company wants along with the bill of sale. Thoughts?

Thank you, but I need someone who has done this since 2014, supposedly rules changed. Should have stated that in original post.

No way, unless the Transport carrier can show the part of either the US or Canadian Law that requires it.
Consider a diff carrier company...

Some time after 911 that became a new requirement. You are not providing it to the seller, you are providing it to the broker.

The new rules state that if the Canadian buyer does not go and complete the transaction in person, then the seller must provide their EIN so the US tax folks can track the export. They do not need your social security number...you can get the ein on-line in 5 minutes and provide that. If you don’t, you cannot export the car to Canada. I’ve done this numerous times as a Canadian buyer...it’s no big deal. Just did it again this past June. It always freaks the US sellers out 😀

Guys...I am the buyer of this car from the originator of this post. I live in Canada and have imported cars before but none since this new rule. Any ideas how to manage this EIN issue? I’m dealing with TFX out of Toronto. Any other carriers that can look after this for me, the buyer? Thank you.

There is no problem doing this and any carrier will have to have the ein number, not just TFX. The seller goes on-line to the link that I provided and fills out the form. 5 minutes later he sends you the EIN number and you give that to TFX’s broker...done deal. I just did this with TFX in June.

The only way to get around this is if you personally go and view the car and buy it. Then, you are the exporter rather than the seller. All that the IRS is trying to do is make sure that items are not being exported out of the US to aid terrorist causes.

If your seller won’t get the EIN number, then you need to find another car to buy.

Right. Although, my understanding is the seller needs to provide his Social Security number through that irs.gov link in order for it to generate the EIN, correct?

The seller does not want to disclose his SSN.

He is not disclosing his ssn to you...and the IRS already has his ssn. He is simply identifying himself to the irs. All you are seeing is his ein. If he isn’t comfortable doing this then you need to find another car to buy or buy from a dealer and they will already have an ein.
