Autocrossers: A question about downshifting to first gear...

Have been autocrossing since the '80's and I avoid downshifts to 1st like the plague. This was drilled into me the hard way from xcrossing my '76 and '84 911s - as noted by George, synchros were weak on these cars (needed tranny rebuilds at 50K miles on both). 993 seems much better 9tranny fine at 67K miles) but I'm not taking chances. Once I'm in second, won't go back down to 1st until after I cross the finish line, and have to creep back to my parking space.

Yeah skippy school doesn't even teach double clutching anymore. They say they do on the itinerary etc., but when it comes down to it they don't stress it but leave it to the driver.

Buck...I haven't competed in my 993 yet but am looking forward to this summer. I was National Champion in E Prepared in a 1970 Datsun 510...It was super fast and I often ran for top time of day. AAAHHHH the good old days [1985,86,87].
