Oil on clutch
I posted last week on a slipping clutch in a car w/ 18k miles. Is it possible that an oil leak somewhere can cause the clutch to be slipping? Could it be the rear main seal (
) ??

Luis,
There are a few things that will cause clutch slippage.
Most common is a worn clutch disk or pressure plate.
Your suggestion of oil contaminants is also possible.
A few early models had issues with insufficient lubrication
of the through-out bearing causing hanging and improper
engagement. Another rare possibility is a faulty slave
cylinder hanging and not returning to position. Usually, this
part fails with noticeable notching and hanging of the clutch
pedal and at significantly higher miles. This part works
harder when the clutch disk begins to wear as it operates
with negative pressure.
It's rare to have clutch failure at 18K miles. Although, this
is possible if the clutch is constantly used in slip mode
for regulated speed, or if it was never engaging properly
from the early stages of life. Hopefully, it's just a weird fluke
with the slave cylinder, otherwise a new clutch and/or seal
is in order.
Good luck!

Thanks David. The clutch is being replaced but I'm wondering about the failure mechanism due to the low miles. Once the clutch is out, it'll be easier to ascertain what exactly is going on.
