Post Help!! I'm being tempted to upgrade...

I currently have a 91K '95 C4. Strong, clean car with no real issues (except the slave cylinder). But while helping a friend find an '87-89 Cab, I've come across a '97 C4S with 21K at $62.

Am I crazy?

MPM,

If I were you, I would consider a 993TT instead. It will provide more long-lasting enjoyment than the C4S, especially considering you own a C4 already.

TT of course would be the ultimate choice if money is no object. But for $62k it is a very good deal. I would do it.

You used the word "upgrade". If thats the attempt, I would recommend against it. Your 95 993 should be reasonably comparable to a 97 993 even allowing for the slightly different torque curve (I do not even consider the 12 hp difference much). It is too slight of an "upgrade".

If, however, you meant that you want to get rid of the 95 model before it hits some kind of 6 figure mileage threshold (some kind of non-linear depreciation curve due to perception in the market not that its how I feel but just throwing that scenario), then perhaps you should do it assuming that you would have done it at about 115K miles or so anyway. Not a bad idea to do it a bit earlier as you have found an ideal replacement vehicle.

BTW, I would not say that the TT is for those for whom money is no object. I think its a value decision too based on deals one finds.. atleast thats how it was for me. If I found a mint low mileage 98 C4S for $55K or some ridiculously low price, I would have gone for it (LOL). Personally I dont think the $62K is a fantastic find - just a fair price or perhaps a good bargain, thats all. Just my opinion after scouting around looking for a 993 for a few months. One more thing..you know your car's 91K history..you do not know the other car's 21K history.

Best of luck

Boy that's a tuff one, especially since I did just that: went from a 95C4 to a 98C4S. Only made the trade 2 weeks ago and now I'm somewhat regretting it because:
1.not much performance difference between the 2 cars.
2.I knew every nook and cranny of the 95 and now am discovering a few issues with the 98 like it has had a LOT of service (transmission and engine overhaul at 15k).
3.Loved my 17 inch wheels and tires on the 95: smoother ride but still good performance. The 18" wheels give you a jolt here in Colorado during pothole and construction season.
IF you know the history of the 97 and it's very clean it sounds like a good deal.
Let us know what you do.

I have to agree here. Unless you simply can't live without the widebody it's not much of an upgrade. It sounds like you may be bored with your 993, perhaps all it needs is a facelift. Maybe you can trick it out with some pimpin' aerokit or Strosek treatment with scoops in the back and NACA ducts on the fenders. Talk to Robin Sun he knows all the homeboy trick body part stuff like high multi-wings, low rider stuff and XEON body lighting upgrades. You can also consider a radical repaint in a day-glo color and 22" wheels (yes I know Viken that goes against the TSB - screw it). That should revitalize your interest in your aging '95.

Me? I prefer bone stock. For me a Euro bumper upgrade is considered defacing the car.

Hmmm...

So much to consider. BTW, when I say upgrading I mean getting cleaner copy of the 993 breed. Untill I can upgrade to a silver/red 993tt (which is when I'll stop upgrading), this C4S is a sweetie. It has a completely documented history and service record. The paint and interior (with those carbon backed sport seats)are flawless.

Due to the milage, trading in the '95 will a losing proposition, and how I dreed selling retail.

Thanks for the comments, I think I'll sleep on it a bit...

mpm,
If you take some of the difference in mony you can rebuild your engine, modify it to a reliable 330hp and blow everybody away. ask Steve Weiner for advise and dont listen to robin.

I agree with everything you said, except the last 4 words. Why the attack on Robin? He didn't direct anything at you. In his opinion that is a good deal, and an opinion is what mpm was asking for.

Mpm,

I’ve done almost the same purchases, 95 C2, 98 C4S and now a 96 TT. I spent 30,000 in tax, transfers and what ever. If I had just gone to the TT when that is what I truly wanted in the first place it would have made more sense.

Get the HP and go with the TT.

I have to thank Jack LA for this. Yes, we all know the transactional cost issue but it helps when someone reminds us. I started looking for a late model C4S but bought a TT and couldn't be happier.

I thought of the added transactional cost issue after hitting "Add Reply" in my first response but its certainly something to consider and one that to me is a deal breaker especially on so minor an upgrade (minor IMHO as explained above by me - could certainly be looked at in some other way of course)
