Hope this works... the link to the thread is below. It is a reprint of an 1998 Road & Track comparison of the 993 vs. 996 , with Paul Frere. Was fun to reread the story.

somehow i knew he would come to that conclusion ............ because the porsche factory gave him both cars to test.

Nota,
C&D recorded 0-60 of 4.6 and 4.7 seconds for two different '95 test cars.

It's also very interesting that, not only are the 993/996 acceleration figures very close, but the 993 does better on both the skidpad and the slalom. I know the 996 is quicker around a track -- I think much of that advantage is because it is easier to drive at the limit.
