Question Adjustable or non-adjustable PSS-9's for TT?

Dear all,

Just a quickie: I have read all the stuff I can PSS-9's but one question is left...

I have a TT and the only handling issue I have with it is that it feels a little heavy under all conditions, and particularly unconnected in the wet.

Either way I am thinking of going over to the full PSS-9 set-up. But... I will not track it more than 2 times per year and so do I need the adjustable system or will the standard PSS-9's do?

All help very appreciated (especially if any of you TT owners have either system).

Will

Will,

Buy the full kit and you won't have to worry about upgrade any more...

Hi Will:

I am nearing updgrade time on my 993, and will choose a non-adjustable setup for 2 reasons:

1. I am not the type to tinker with the adjustments enough to make it worth my while...I just don't need the car to have that capability while the driver is still the limitation!
2. I think it makes the install/align that much more challenging with the additional adjustability, and I don't have too much faith in local wrenches

I want a stiffer, lower and sportier ride for street and track, and will go with a well matched set of shocks/springs/bars to do so. (In the words of Ronco--set it and forget it!)

Just one opinion.

Will,

I'm assuming you mean between the Bil HD and the PSS-9, right?
One person posted that he had one defective shock on his PSS9 system. I'm hoping that this is an isolated incident. Personally, I'm doing a "wait and see" over the next year regarding both systems. Yet, I'm leaning heavily toward the PSS-9. Adjustability is always a good thing, in my book, whether that means for the track, or just to suit it to your own desires.

My take is that you will (probably) change the suspension only once, so consider the possibility that in the future you may do more track events, you may get more interested in "tuning" the car's chassis, or you may simply want your TT dialed in for YOUR driving style, even if it is 99% street. While the HD setup is reportedly clearly superior to the OEM setup, the PSS9 seems better suited to adapting to one's changing needs. This, at least, is what I'm thinking.....assuming there are no further issues with the *****/adjustability, that is.

Edward,

I am the one with a defective PSS-9 shock. Never the less I still recommended the system.

To me, it makes more sense to have an adjustable system for someone who seek couple of DEs a year so that the rest of the time he can turn softer for daily use...

Gert had just shipped out my replacement and should get here first part of next week...You can't get better service ANYWHERE...

The adjustments of the PSS-9's are so simple (just turn the ***** under the car) that you can easily adjust to your liking in a 5 minute process. I have adjusted it when using for street and track. It is nice to have the flexibility. You don't need to track the car to want to take advantage of the adjustments.

Adjusting the swaybars requires a bit more work.

By the way, I enjoy playing with the adjustments just to experience different handling characteristics. More ways to make our toys more fun. <img src="graemlins/jumper.gif" border="0" alt="[jumper]" />

The height adjustments are the same as your front struts height adjustments but the rears are adjustable just like the front one on PSS-9 AND HDs as well...

Friends -

Thanks for the advice... I realise now that my question was pretty dumb. What I meant to ask was:

What is the difference between these PSS-9 units:

<a href="http://64.35.111.106/cpx_p93066.htm" target="_blank">http://64.35.111.106/cpx_p93066.htm</a>

and these:

<a href="http://64.35.111.106/cpx_p93067.htm" target="_blank">http://64.35.111.106/cpx_p93067.htm</a>

i.e. should I have the adjustable stabilisers?

Still a dumb question probably but humour me

Thanks again. Will

I'm in a similar predicament as you will.

My original plans were to get the HD's with the ROW M030 springs and swaybars. However, because of the issue with lowering the front end and the rear spring height, I've decided to reconsider.

Now, I think I'm going to get the PSS9's. But with the standard Euro M030 ROW swaybars instead of the factory adjustable sway bars.

The installation/alignment costs is what seems most expensive to me and I want to get the best shocks that I can to avoid duplicate installation costs.

I think that this combo would be a good setup for my occasaional track days, in terms of price and performance.

My '96 993 has ROW sway bars and PSS9 coil overs.
It is the single best modification I have ever made to my car. I attend several DEs but they are also great for everyday. You will not regret it. Jim in St. Louis

I'm having my H&R non adjustable and M030 sways installed on July 3rd. I will let you guys know how this system performs. I myself was extremely torn between the PSS-9 , the HD etc but like Chris I want something to learn as it is set up on my car so I decided on the H&R which has the benefits of the PSS-9 (ride height etc) without the ***** of adjustability. This system uses the same Bilstein shocks I guess like the PSS-9 and the fact that RUF uses this H&R kind of set up on his latest TT creations speaks of the quality. Plus I was a bit afraid of the reported need for monoballs with the PSS-9. I know the jury is still out on this but I do not really want to be unplesantly surprised in the future.
So I will let you guys know and add to your confusion! I can't wait!!!!

Hi all,

I ran the PSS-9 setup on my 993C4 with the std(european) anti-roll bars for 8 months, and added the RS adjustable anti-roll bars 3 months ago. The car is much better with the RS adjustable bars, response to steering input in particular is much improved, I would highly recommend stiffer anti-roll bars to go with the PSS-9 to get the most out of the upgrade, even if they are not the RS adjustable bars.

Monoballs are not required for the PSS-9. When the RS bars were fitted we removed the rear struts to see how secure everything was (after 12,000 miles) with the std top mount, everything was perfect, no problem at all. If you want some added peace of mind a simple washer/spacer can be turned up to adapt the conical top mount better to the flat top of the PSS-9 strut. I gather Bilstein's recent reaction to the concerns raised has been to ship monoballs with the kit for the rears (acording to one installer I spoke to recently) but this seems an expensive solution to what does not seem to be a problem, and one that is not ideal for predominantly street use.

I would echo the above sentiments. I recently spent a few days on the track, tweeking the PSS9 suspension and RS sway bars. The adjustable sway bars set at stiffer than middle/middle greatly enhances the stability at track speeds. I found the best sway bar set up for me is rear/full stiff, front/1 less than full stiff. For track, I set the PSS9 shocks full stiff F/R. On the street, I set the shocks at 6/6. The car is much more predictable on the track with the RS sway bars. I also find it very comfortable on the street with this set up, although it is slightly better (softer) with the sway bars middle/middle for street. The sway bars take about 20-30 min. to re-set, and I'm just going to leave them at the track settings.
I am glad to hear that the PSS9 showed no wear after 12k miles without monoballs. I haven't heard or felt any problem, but I've just 2k track miles thus far. <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />
