My 96 cabriolet did something similar.
I opened the door and it was chiming.
I was in a hurry got out of the car closed the door and I could not set the alarm. I locked the door manually.
I got out of work at 5:30 pm and tried the remote it would not work.
I just saw the flashing light in the door as I pushed the remote button.
I unlocked the door with the key and heard the horn honk once.
I got in the car and couldn't start it.
The alarm went off and I could not shut it off.
The remote just made the light flash quicker in the door.
I have one of those **** battery disconnect switches and I tried disconnecting the battery and I waited 30 minutes.
After 30 minutes I reconnected the battery and sure enough the alarm went back on and started honking away.
The remote was still worthless.
I was getting ready to call a tow truck went I turned the steering wheel with the key in the ignition.
The steering wheel unlocked and I heard something click and all of a sudden the alarm went off and the remote started working again.
Bizarre!!!
From what I found so far owning this car if you can't lock the door with the imobilizer get back in the car turn the ignition back on and or start the motor. This usually clears the problem. If you can't lock the door with the imobilizer be afraid of being stranded.

It did it again today.
I removed the key and the thing started chiming.
This time I just turned the steering wheel and it stopped chiming.
Is it just the ignition switch or something else in the steering column?
Thanks for the help.
I want to replace whatever is causing this before it leaves me stranded.
regards,
Steve

Sounds like the same thing to me. Some of the reasons the chime stops are coincidental. For me it was hitting the turn signal stalk. Chances are good it is the part related to the ignition switch.
