Default H&R springs clank?

I was speaking to a very reputable Porsche mechanic today and he mentioned something that I have not heard before. He said that H&R springs clank on 993. According to him, the coils collide under load. When pressed to discribe the sound, he said that it usually sounds like a loose shock in the rear.
I have not heard of this before. Can anyone with H&Rs elaborate on this please, as my summer project is most likely to put Bilstein HDs and H&Rs in my C2?

Mike,

I have the H&R/HD combo and I have not experienced the clanking/broken shock sound. When I purchased my car, it had the H&R's with stock shocks. The ride was horrible. The HD's have transformed the car. I have had the HD's on my car for almost 3 months, which is about 1000 miles for me.

Since my car is so low, I am VERY careful in going over rough road areas, railroad tracks, etc., so perhaps I just haven't driven it under conditions where this would occur.

No clunking on mine either (springs should be tie-wrapped to perches)

I have the H&R / Bilstein HD combo... Actually, if I hit a harsh road surface transition - usually the metal strip on an uneven expansion joint - I do get a clank that might fit the bill of this description. This only happens on very hard hits, however, and I can only really hear it with the windows down. Even driving ~80 miles per day including some rough roads, it hasn't ever been a nuisance or problem and I never even thought about it until this thread.

I'll have to try the tie-wrap solution - I can see where that might help.

Grant-do you or anyone else have pictures of this tie down arrangement?

Thanks. I'd appreciate a picture if it's not a lot of trouble.

Take care,

chuck

I have H&R/HD set-up. No clanking here and I've hit a few nasty potholes!

Look about 80% down the page - there's a description of tie wrapping the springs...
