Default 993 Cup Car

Hello everyone! I'm looking for some assitance with identifying the engine in a 1997 993 Cup Car. The engine number is 6403101 (with no letters) and the VIN is WP0ZZZ99ZVS398091. The car has racing history. I understand this is definitely not the original engine that came with the car. It is a 3.8, but does anyone have any insight on this engine number and what model year/model this engine might have come from? I'm not sure if this engine was installed in order for the car to compete in different races. Current owner states it was

Also in general, I'm curious about how common place it is for Cup Cars with racing history to have non original engines and to what extent that might help/hurt the value in your opinions.

Thank you in advance!

The listing is here: https://lbilimited.com/offerings/199...e-911-cup-3-8/

I would first contact the most recent engine builder listed in your car history story on the web page you provided the URL above. The see if he just swapped out an engine from his inventory at the last rebuild. Swapping out engines on race cars in some cases is as common as using new tissues from a box of Kleenex. FOr some complete engines are simply spares like other components on the car. I would then reach back to the previous owners and get a contact name for who was contracted to rebuilt engines for them.
Cup Cars were probably the providence of the Porsche racing department so they may have some historical information as well as to who the engine you have was sold to. I suspect the racing department has a historian who has reams of this sort of information.
Hope this helps.
Andy

the chassis is correct for a'97 993 Cup and the pictures mostly match what would have been seen on those cars

the engine is not correct for that car, the engine # for a '97 993Cup ought to be in the range 62P 85700-85730 and all started w/ 8 in the 3rd position, I'ts possible that the block is a replacement

The other thing I noticed is that the trans is from a US street car w/ lsd, it is a g50/20 and ought to have a g50/30

In addition to the above, the panel gaps are pretty noticeably misaligned. It spent its sole life on track, so there’s an allowance. Retubbed? I’m pretty sure most were. Based upon all of this, they’re only asking $200k+. Cups with actual remaining parts are going for $400k and up. If you search some notable auctions, cups and the like with issues rarely went above $150k. Most didn’t sell.

im pretty sure that during its actual campaign, the block would be replaced with the equal serial number from factory. Spec race. Outside of that period, the sky’s the limit. You’ll know quickly based upon the intake also. Dawes is fairly well known, and would probably have records of working on this rare car. But really tough to know without opening it up.

Thank you all for your feedback. @Sword_of_Spirit do you have any links to auctions of ones that didn't sell? I'd like to compare to see the value in this one. I've searched for current and recent sales and I've only seen a small handful, which makes sense since there weren't many made, but I hadn't seen any particularly $ sales. Thank you!

Search is your best friend.

You’re paying for the Vin (Shell). Buy an RSCS and import from Europe. Better and matching numbers. Unless you want to resurrect which will be almost the cost of matching one. Get a good broker and search. always a few for sale.

I don’t have any links. A quick search of 993 Supercup for Sale on DuckDuckGo yields a lot (current and historical). Google even more

Thank you! I had seen the one on bring a trailer that bid up to 140k, but I think with that super personalized paint job it's gonna be harder to sell anyway vs a solid color. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...-911-supercup/

I've seen a few others as well but the low milage and non-raced (engine matching) are Seinfeld money!

Thanks for your responses, I appreciate it.

not all original and in nasty condition....case,trans, aftermarket side skirts, no SuperCup center steering wheel button, not a good example.....hence the price

Follow up to this thread, I spoke with the shop that did the rebuild of the motor. They said they got a 3.6L engine and engine block, bored it out to 3.8L. The block is a 3.6. The transmission was also not original to the car as another member pointed out. The car has not been re-tubbed, it's the original tub, and they didn't have any record of it being in a bad accident. I'm sure there are a lot of original parts, but there are also a lot of parts that are not original. I'd rather wait for a better example of a cup car, preferrably with a matching engine, so I'm passing on buying this one. The search continues. Thank you to all who provided feedback.
