Default Tool Kit

Here's my '96 C2 Tool Kit. The red tape means something beside red screwdriver. Earlier tool kits had red and yellow tags sewn into the corner, late was just tape. Maybe it designates it as for a sunroof car with the tool to open manually, or the power seat manual crank

I think it's funny to see these. Porsche obviously believed its customers were very mechanically inclined, which is very cool.

Various kits don' t have all of these items, but here is a labeled kit from an RS America that has many items also in the 993 kits.

Zed, we mentioned Brett Johnson's books, I emailed him and he says that he's too busy with the 914 book going to press very soon and the updated version of the early 911/912 book, plus he says he has no clue about the 964 or 993 cars. Oh well it was worth try.

I forgot about that, I think I have one somewhere, how about the cassette cleaning kit? A friend who bought a '95 993 said his came with a demo cassette by Dolby and Becker, never seen one however.

Zed, nice collection of tool kits, the jack you show with the green bag is similar to a 944 jack, which is way better than the 964/993/968 jacks as shown in the other picture, it may have a 944 part number and a nice crank handle. It's interesting the early kits have 5 wrenches then they went cheap and only put in two. The one tool that Porsche has never included, yet should have been in the kits is a 6mm Allen wrench, which is used for the clamp nut on front wheel bearings since 1958.

Hi Zed,
Seeing that I view the kit as something one will actually use in my USA delivered 1996 Carrera I have added a few extra items to my kit:

Also the factory air pump died a long time ago on its first use.

zed-

You have many pics of different tool kits.... but I can't tell which one is for a 97 non-turbo, if that matters...

thanks

I don't hold myself out to be a tool expert by any means. Just sharing what little I have learned from owning 3 993s over the years.
I have edited my initial post to provide more descriptive details about contents. I have not addressed jacks yet.
As these become collectible, a resource like this one assembled for 356 cars will become invaluable- http://www.356tools.com
A similar online resource exists for early 911 and 914/6 tool kits. These are bibles for concours.

From what I have observed from cars sold online, there is no difference between non-turbo and turbo kits. Please correct me if wrong.

We don't now a lot of things regarding 993 tool kits that could contribute to the variation.
Was the kit provided at the factory and placed in the car delivered to the dealer?
Was the kit a dealer responsibility to place a tool kit from Porsche in the car before customer delivery?
Was the kit different for various global markets?
The kit became markedly reduced in items provided and functional over the years, why?
Was there a model year cut off to the 2 different type kits or were they just provided until inventory was depleted?

Zed, you brought up a lot of valid points about tool kits, a tough list to find answers to, but now is the time to try. We need to hear from a few that worked at the dealers back in the 90's. Fortunately it looks like there were far fewer variations compared to the 356s. If you add the 964s into it there might be 4 styles of bags and about the same for the tool contents. Many smaller tools get lost and some have pieces added by the owners, so it's pretty hard to figure out what was original.
From what I have seen, the earlier non-vario ram cars had 5 wrenches, and the 96 and later had 2. The bags changed from 10 pocket bags with white cloth inside to the all black vinyl in late 96, and only having 7 pockets, for the 97-98 models.
The ones currently being sold by some Porsche dealers (Suncoast) as original have red handled pliers, were those ever originally in 993 kits?, and these are the 10 pocket style with what looks like black cloth inside, plus spark plug wrench (964?) and black screwdrivers, guessing these are a replacement/repro kit.
Screw drivers from the earlier cars have two Philips shafts, one long and one short, later on kits seem to have only one medium length Philips shaft and the flat blade. Some red handles say "W. Germany", others "Made In Germany" and others are Blank. Then there are the reversible ones with black handles, Boxster?
The"L" shaped Klein brand tool, flat blade screwdriver(for sunroof) the other end with the 12 point for holding the alternator shaft, then there are ones that are just smooth on one end, how to hold the shaft when changing belts? and some kits had both?
Allen wrenches? 5mm, 4mm, 8mm and 10mm, seem to be found in various kits. Guessing the uses for each size would maybe tell what went where, my '96 kit has a 5mm only.
It will be an interesting thread, that hopefully will solve some of the mysteries.
