OT! Audi Allroad…
#16
John - I'm not sure if you are aware that Audi has a current promotion where you can borrow a car for a 24 hour test drive...the allroad is one of the cars you can borrow IIRC (unfortunately the RS6 is not ). Not sure if both the V8 and the turbos are available.
I was considering getting a used allroad but picked up a used '03 S6 avant in Jan that included an Audi extended warranty. I've driven the car to Vegas 3 times since and it drove flawlessly....it was a great car to have during the LA storms in Feb. I drove it much more that the Pcar while I was in LA...deceivingly fast and a great handler for a 4000lb car. The only issue I have with it is that the drive-by-wire controls are not that linear and the power steering is a littly bit too boosted. But I never thought a wagon could be so much fun...and I don't have kids or am married! A set of Hotchkiss swaybars is on the to-do list to eliminate the body roll.
If you don't need the offroad capability and want to avoid the horrendous Audi depreciation, you may want to consider an Audi assured '02 S6...ones with 20-35K run in the low $40Ks which is comparable to a new turbo allroad and $20K less than what they sold for new. Unfortunately they won't be making these anymore since they didn't sell all that well....most buyers have a hard tiem justifying $65-70K for a station wagon no matter how fast it is. Either way I would highly recommend that if you go the used route, you get one with an Audi certified car with the 2yr extened warranty....check the AudiUSA website.

4.2 V8. Haven't been following the market but the price seems decent.

I’ve been thinking about this since I posted and am starting to lean towards the Touareg. I use the car primarily for work and the extra space in the rear would come in handy. 90% of my driving is on the freeway and being a little taller would help me transition from my full-sized pick up. Oh decisions decisions

SUV? NO NO NO! No originality! Get the Allroad! It has over 8 inches of ground clearance. That's one inch shy of the Touareg.
For highway driving you can lower it to the normal 5.6 inches (Touareg is 6.5).
You decision of course but...

The X5 has no cargo room. Dimensions are ridiculous for a car of its type. Before getting the Tahoe I really wanted an Allroad or a Touareg. We just needed more room than they could offer

Randy is right about the X5...my wife's X5 has woeful storage. FWIW, the 4.4 litre engine on our X5 feels much more powerful than the V-8 found in the Cayenne S. I drove the Cayenne for a few days and literally had to open the hood to verify it had the V-8 in it.

I have been driving a 6 speed A6 2.7T since that fateful day 13 months ago when the 993 got fed up and left.
I love the AR - great car. I would rather be driving one than my A6 - same inside (obviously except for the extra space in the AR). But I have to say that the Toureg is awesome inside. My wife's ML500sport doesn't hold a candle to it. Plus, you could tow your 993 with it, can't do that with the AR.
Good luck,
E. J.
