Smile 901 Prototype: Amelia Island Concourse, only one in existance

Below are a couple of photos I took today at the Amelia Island Concourse of one of the rarest Porsches of all. It's a 1963 901 Prototype and is the only one in the world remaining of the 4 models that were originally assigned bodies.

The Porsche factory has been trying to buy this car but has not offered enough money for the owner to be interested in parting with it. He said they offered 1M.

Very nice, thanks for posting. So, is Seinfeld's car the first 911 then? I thought he had a 901 also.

The 901 Prototype was introduced Sept. 12, 1963 at the Frankfurt International Auto Show, but production was 1 year away. In Oct of 1964 a month after production of the 901 stated the model designation was changed to 911 to avoid a conflict with Puegeot which had a 0 in the middle of their model designations.

Maybe Seinfield has a production 901 that was designated as such before the the model designation was changed.

A year or two ago there was an article in Excellence on this car - great story as the owner went searching the company archives to find its true history.

Ah, for the good old days when a couple of bungee type springs would hold up the engine lid.

I bet they still work as well today as they did the day they were made... of course I can't say the same about my hood shocks. I think I'd prefer aftermarket bungee springs to replacement hood shocks!
