Question Any updates on tire pressure for the Sport Cups?

Hi all,
The time is close for me to try my new Sport Cups this weekend on the track. Looking at the archives there were varied opinions regarding the tire pressures. Some consent that you have to run them really low some 26-28 psi Hot! Since the matter has not been discussed for some months now, anyone has any more experience to share with this tire and the pressures.I will be running 225/45/17 and 255/40/17 combo.
Also going to the track and back should I stick to 34-36 cold?

TIA

Great question, Danny

I got a set of wheels over the winter (thank you Jeff), and will be putting Sport Cups on them as well.

Please post your reactions to them.

Isn't this information included in the FAQ?

Danny

How much the character of the car changed when You put 225/45-s as front tire instead of 205/50. You left 255 rear's? Is oversteering a problem or tight turns are easier to make?

Danny:

I like either 34 front and 35 rear or 35 front and 36 rear. Those are hot tire pressures.

My car seems to like 35-36 hot combo as well. The Michelin People were working with racers at VIR last year. They were trying to get us to run 38-42 hot depending on the car weight. I opted to stick with the lower pressures. I think I would drive to the track on high 30's then bleed air off as the days temps rise.

I've used similar pressures as Hank & Bill.

Between 33(f) & 34(r) to 35(f) & 36(r).
Sometimes tried more than 1 psi difference b/ween front & rear though (34 & 36) but 34 & 35 was the best.

32-35psi hot seems to work very well. Higher pressures cause greasyness and excessive center wear. See Michelin's Cup FAQ:

<a href="http://michelinman.com/assets/pdfs/doc_pilotsport_technical.pdf" target="_blank">http://michelinman.com/assets/pdfs/doc_pilotsport_technical.pdf</a>

I am using negative cambers on the low side of their recommended range.

Me too, as Hank writes (and others)

Hank

In addition, there is some great Care and Feeding Info on the Pilot Sport Cups, either on the Michelin site, or the Tire Rack site. Because of your investment in these tires ($1,000), you may be interested in quantifying their performance, I suggest recording tire preseures and tire temps after each lap. I am trying to justify the added expense of the VictoRacers with enhanced tire life. Cranking in 2 1/2 - rear and 1 1/2 negative fron + the Sport Cups got me 2.4 seconds a lap at Willow Springs International Raceway in December. There are few mods you can do to your car and get nearly 2.5 seconds a lap.

MPSCs? I'm going to need a turbo to keep up. <img border="0" alt="[crying]" title="" src="graemlins/crying.gif" />

Joey

I had to get 'em.

I'm hearing your footsteps, or should I say tire squeals.

Thanks guys for the info. I will run 34,35 and will take it from there. Hank I have mounted your RSCS spoilers so that will be interesting to see what kind of difference that will make as well! BTW they do look beautiful, thanks again!

mds thanks for the link, I have read that , my question was aimed to the group here because of the individual experiences with our cars. Michellin's data is generic aimed for a variety of cars. Same tires have different behavior in different cars, a bright example is the S03 who is not an optimal tire for the 993 but for other cars it is. Previous postings here indicated a bit different data and because our cars are similar in setups etc the board data would be more usefull to all of us who run 993's with the cups.

Jack to answer your question it depends on your setup. To say that by going to 225's in the front you dial out understeer it is true. However the variables of setup and suspension will affect the behavior. So with my set up (H&R coilovers, M030 sways and -2 neg camber all around) the car was very neutral with a hint of oversteer. The 225's for sure helped this behavior. The cups again are 225 and 255 on stock 17 wheels so this weekend will tell...
I will post my impressions after the weekend and hopefully we can add this to the Faq <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

I also just purchased a set of 225/255 17" pilot sport cups and the odd thing is that the 225 pilots are the same width as my 205 Bridgestone S03 street set of fronts. I looked at the Michelin sport cup spec sheet and the tire width for the 225 is listed as narrower than the 205 width! I know it's strange and also disapointing. I was expecting to get a wider tire for the 225/45-17.
