Default USB in ashtray

I have a 97 4S that I like to keep as stock looking as possible. I've been thinking about ways to add a USB port and saw this photo from a member who had installed the Porsche Classic Radio and put the USB ports in the ashtray:

I like this but don't want to install the Porsche Classic Radio. I was thinking of maybe something like this, with the "back seat" portion in the ashtray, and rewired so it connects into a circuit, rather than into the cigarette lighter;

In any event, it seems like such an obvious place to put a USB port (assuming you don't smoke), I wanted to see if anyone else has done something like this before I go too far down the rabbit hole.

Seems like a reasonable and very doable project.
The outlet can be purchased on eBay or Amazon.

The electrical section of the below can give you some insights as to how to wire it:

That second one looks great. Thanks! Had trouble finding one that had a decent bracket so it looks fairly clean.

Must be something in the air! One of my projects today was prototyping this set up. Still needs fitting but I think I'm going to like it. I'm sure some will say if you have a voltage gauge you should watch it all the time, but I think the trade off with not having the distracting LED's visible all the time (especially at night) is worth it, Will update with the final install. Oh, and before I get any helpful hints, that's not my actual car battery voltage. It's hooked up to an old key fob battery for testing. Here's info on the unit.

Pretty cool that the green ring starts flashing below 11.5v.

I went with adding an accessory outlet so it can be used with 12 Volt accessories or a USB/voltmeter like Ron shows above to make the install more flexible.
My install is through the dash but to each their own.

Yes - I Iike your solution as well because you now have an auxiliary socket of the "right" size. But as you said it's a personal taste thing. And I like the fact that this will be reversible.

I forgot to make it clear - I'm not trying to add a new socket in the tray to stick this thing into - would never fit. I'm actually planning on gutting this unit and wiring and mounting the display on the right side of the tray opening. We'll see how it goes.
