Post A Couple of Interesting Observations at my Dealer Tonight...(mildly OT)

Dropped off my 993 tonight for what I am sure is going to be a new steering rack (at 32k miles!!) and on the way out the door decided to look in the showroom. There's a brand new 996 Turbo on the floor, blue over gray leather, sport seats, loaded, for sale!! I last had heard there was still a big wait list on the things but the salesman said, no, they can't sell these in snowy areas right now, so we're getting extras, like this one (I live in San Diego). Very interesting...

So I also decided to ask about the Cayenne. He told me the official launch date was March 15, and there was still plenty of cars available in the first shipment, why don't we go look for one? I'm not in the market for a Cayenne so I said no, but it just goes to show you that they are not having stellar demand for the thing. Wonder what will happen when the "newness" wears off and all the early adopters are gone.

Bummer on the steering rack. I hear that a lot of them are getting replaced due to leaking. Maybe there ought to be a recall on this? Are the problems limited to the awd, or is the C2 also having this problem?

Yup There's a 996 GT2 sitting on consignment nearby my house...been there for 2+ months now. Nice silver color too. But then again at $199,500, I don't exoect that to move too fast anytime soon either

Kim --
Thanks for the tip, but fortunately, I bought a comprehensive 7/70 no deductible warranty on the car, so there is no out of pocket expense for a new rack.

It seems that an extended warranty is somewhat of a requirement on a high end car!

How can one check if the steering rack is leaking or what are the sighs of a leaking steering rack?

Thanks.

Since we talked about steering rack now, mine has a very small leak that all 3 mechanics didn't seem to think it's serious. Is it going to lead to replacing the rack if I keep ignoring the leak?

Thx
