I specifically searched for a 1995 and found one about a year ago. Simple $80 cable and Freeware and you have the diagnostics, can reset codes, etc. Turns out only early 993s don't have the immobilizer (or maybe it was an option in 95?) - regardless I got lucky not having it. I bought a $30 keyless entry module on Amazon, installed under passenger seat, and now have keyless entry. Best of both worlds. I also don't have to worry about SAI CELs. I can't comment on Varioram nor if the power is noticeable as I haven't driven a 95 and 96+ back to back or even recently. I sure didn't notice anything missing when I bought my 1995. Neither car is fast by modern standards anyway. I'm a DIY type myself. Car is not particularly fun to work on - depending on what other brands you are more familiar with.

Just adding to this... there's about a 12HP increase from 1995 to 1996. Admittedly these cars are no longer considered fast, but if HP is important to you, it'll likely take you a few thousand $ to make up that 12HP difference.

Nope. As mentioned, you have obd1 with an obd2 connector.

I think most of us 95 owners are glad to not care about the clogged Sai plumbing.

My first 993, a very early 94 build, did not have immobilizer.

Thank you for your replies! I can be careless about 12hp gain with Varioram. I am willing to invest on 993 specific OBD1 reader. Good to know immobilizer can be bypassed. I live in So Cal and spend about 1.5 hour each way to my work with lots of stop and go traffic and this is the reason I want automatic with Tiptronic. I've read a report came out of UK that only 3 out of 10 Porsche's very own employees with manual tranny were able to beat automatic with Tiptronic from 0 to 62mph test, by not much anyway, so Tiptronic is ok with me.

To clarify a point, the earlier '95 993's have "DRIVE BLOCK" but not the IMMOBILIZER on some later '95's and all '96's and up. It's actuated by manually locking the vehicle with the key, not a fob. Also, there are a few sources for chips that can easily equal the added hp from VARIORAM.

So what is the difference between drive block and immobilizer?
i have the blinking lights on the door but do not have a key fob, just a regular key. Also no "Porsche Drive Block" sticker.

Is that really a valid issue? Isn't it common practice in custom exhaust design to stick the "pre cat" O2 sensors in the tubing as normal to read a "dirty" value and then take the normally "post cat" O2 sensor(s) and instead of plumbing them in the exhaust system, you simply zip tie them somewhere outside the exhaust system reading "clean" air. This is how most cat bypass systems work with ODB2. There has to be a measurable difference between pre and post cat. If you get rid of the cat, the readings would be essentially the same. If you move the post-cat sensor outside the system, the computer is normally happy.

With DRIVE BLOCK, you just unlock the car, turn the key to start the car. When you leave the car unlocked, you don't have to lock, unlock to start the car or get in, press the fob button, wait for the light to go out, then start. If the car with DRIVE BLOCK is left unlocked, it doesn't arm itself.
