Arrow I ran a "G-Tech run" with my 993...

Hey there people,

I ran a few G-tech measurements on my 1995 993 today. Here are the results - to those interested:

"ET"

"MPH"

Stock engine, Robin Sun Mufflers, 1/3 tank fuel, 50 degrees ambient, shifts at just under redline, non abusive launch (no tire spin or clutch slip), 0-60 reading = 5.01 seconds.

BTW... Here was an ET run BEFORE "RSR" mufflers:

Very similar conditions.

Some quick Q&A for you now:

1.Yes the G-Tech is a quality device.
2.A G-tech can be bought for $139 @(www.gtechpro.com).
3.I have run a G-tech at a drag strip & found it to be within a tenth & 1 - 2 MPH of an actual time slip. The HP readings are also extremely close to Dyno Jet readings.
4.Robin Sun Mufflers make HP.
5.Robin Sun Mufflers sound wonderful.
6.God bless Robin Sun.

How do you launch without clutch slip?

Hmmm, very hard to put it in words... I guess it just comes natural for me, but I just "match" the revs with clutch action. It's just like normal driving, but with more RPM. I basically just want you to know that the launch was "easy" not "abusive" is all.

As I see it, the key here (with a G-tech) is to make your runs "repeatable" so that you can use the device for a tuning tool. The launch I used is "repeatable." That way I can watch my improvements in power or time - w/o wearing out any of the drivetrain.

Hoe does it read out the horsepower? Has the horsepower compared with the dyno reading?

A full second quicker! Wow, a 12.58 is faster than the last 996TT I saw run at the drag strip. Are you sure you weren't running downhill?!?

Thumbs up

Norbert,

The G-tech will give you HP readings (at the wheels) when you enter in your cars "as tested" weight, then go out & accelerate. The G-tech takes the G force your car can make upon acceleration, and calculates the HP it takes to reach the G load & move that much weight (that you programed in). Get it?

I once ran a G-tech run right after doing a Dyno Jet run w/ my 1978 930. I had 375 HP at the wheels on the Dyno, and the G-tech showed 380 HP when I ran it just 5 minutes after the Dyno run.

Cool!

Phil! I knew that wing looked good... I just had no idea it was worth 100 more horsepower! Geezz I should have known!

I have run my G-tech at the drag strip and found the ET to be pretty accurate. The MPH measures much higher then the strip as it is actual MPH, not averaged. It would read 123 mph when the track gave me 118. The "Dyno" number was very close: It showed me 414RWHP which correlates pretty well with my previous dyno results of 422 RWHP SAE. I had installed a air fuel tuner since the dyno so I may be putting out a bit more than 422 RWHP now.
I find it hard to use off the dragstrip as I can't seem to find a completely flat road where it is safe to go from a stop to over 120 mph. I wish I lived in Nevada.....

I borrowed a G-Tech from a friend and was able to get a 4.83 0-60 in my '95 993. But it was not too repeatable. I used an aggressive clutch to start, barely used the clutch getting into 2nd (slight crunch), and chickened out on speed before hitting the 1/4 mi. Because of the temptation to drive like this repeatedly, I did not buy one for myself.

I don't think accuracy is an issue with the G-Tech unit itself. Your setup is. If the unit moves or wiggles under hard acceleration, it will cause inaccurate readings. And the windings on the cord are tight, adding to the problem. I imagine if you take out the G-Tech and put it back in, it would be difficult to get repeatable readings unless you have it installed very tightly. Ideal setup would be to mount inside the dash somehow, but I understand that the cord is soldered into the mainboard, and is difficult to swap with a different power source.

Quick Reply: I ran a "G-Tech run" with my 993...
