Thanks Robert for the info, never even heard about them before.

RS, I know... And I'n thinking, especially if I go with RS (you don't happen to have any style recommendations..? )Does he have Clubsport splitters & wing too?

Silver, I knew it! <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" />

Now that you're talking (about splitters), friend of mine has carbon fiber (painted silver) euro "s" splitters for sale & only for about $200 I'll buy them & start teasing you!

FWIW, I'm fitting up the GTS2-993 wing from MA Shaw, I think also known as the Supercup wing? That and the RS (GT2 style) front splitter with the OEM RS sideskirts I also got from Mike. This I get fitted next week, I can let you know how they look after that?

Mike seems very willing to help out. Even got me another OEM side skirt when I thought mine was damaged (blemish from the mould).

Fact of the matter is, I moved here frmo Australia and ni talking with Mike, he supplies a lot of the guys I knew back "Down Under" <img src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" border="0" alt="[bigbye]" /> .

I'll let you know the results.

Dylan.

Dylan,

sounds like you are having the splitter I like & the wing is almost the same.

Please let me know how all went after they've been installed.

I don't see those splitters nor side skirts on their web page, are these items that he has but they just are not showen on their web page?

FF,
will give you the scoop when all is said and done. I have confidence with Mike for the fact that he wasn't just name dropping, he had no way of knowing that I knew a lot of the Porsche guys in Australia after rebuilding my car there.

Mike has two sites <a href="http://www.mashaw.com" target="_blank">www.mashaw.com</a> and .net from memory? I think the .net only has wings at the moment but he has a catalogue with everything for the 70's through to todays cars. You can email Mike from his site and perhaps request a catalogue. He helped me out with a contact who is also nice and cheap (not much good if your not here in CA though <img src="graemlins/wave.gif" border="0" alt="[byebye]" /> ).

I am basically going for the RS look as far as front bumper/splitter (although I'm having my front splitter fabricated to fit a Euro TT front bumper), side skirts and rear wing. Take a look at this guys car/site, he has Mike's gear on his race cars (<a href="http://www.parabolicmotorsports.com" target="_blank">Parabolic Motorsports</a>).

Hit me up in (less than) 2 weeks and I'll send some pics and comments. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Thanks Dylan,

I've only visited the .com site, it seems that the .net is better.

However, I'll order the catalog and see what they got (now that I know they have parts for older cars too, maybe I'll order something for my SC, I've been thinking a little vintage race care project with her...)

After your 'job' is done, let me know, I'm very interested to hear about it.

Thumbs up

Hi FF,
it's finally back. Mike actually had his stuff ready ahead of his scheduled time, but (as I've found with most bodywork guys), the preparation and fitment took longer than scheduled. And it's still not 100% complete.

Let me just say, I'm pretty fussy about things you have control over. If it's possible to do a good job, then I expect a good job. With that in mind, I am concious that these are glass copies. I am not 100% satisfied with my end result, but that's not due to the parts/components.

I am very surprised with the quality of finish. I don't know how much work had to be put into them but the finish is very smooth and straight. I even looked at how good a fit the wing was to the existing engine lid. It would be lucky if the two (matching) lines where the wing mounts to the lid vary by any noticeable amount. They match up surprisingly well!!

Note these things though.

1) Be prepared for your shocks not supporting the weight of the new wing.

2) Ask your painter to paint INSIDE the wing. Would make the finish look a little more professional.

3) My guy put metal/mesh inside the air intakes, the fit could have been a little better but I don't think this relates to the wing.

4) The inner openning of the wing is big. I was able to fit my existing INNER grill (yes, you use your existing OUTER grill) by drilling a couple holes in the plastic (of that innner grill) and using speed clips.

Otherwise, even the finish on the inside of the wing was smooth.

My only complaint at the minute, but I will discuss with Mike first, the Carbon blade does not fit flush to the aluminum support/mount. And mine had several small nicks in the carbon, meaning it didn't look all that good left un-painted? My body work finish was not concourse, but I think the shape of the components would go pretty close.

Remember, the final result is in the hands of your bodywork guy.

Buy with confidence.

Regards,
Dylan.

Question

By the way. How do I de-activate the internal light for the rear wnig? The one that indicates if the wing is operational or not? Now it comes on becuase all is removed? I took the fuse for the wing out (position 37 from memory?).

Thanks,
Dylan (again).

For a good Do It Yourself instruction on how to disable the interior warning light, see p-car.com. In the DIY section there are instructions for either jumping the rear spoiler motor feedback or another process that disables it entirely. I chose to jumper the feedback switch when I put my Gemballa wing on my 97 993 and it did the job without a hitch.

Gert's complete 993RS kit is about $2,800. MA Shaw, Better Bodies...probably less than $1,000 without side skirts. Add in the factory side skirts from Gert at about $750, and your in for $close to $1,800.

For $1,000 more, or less than $30 a month, $1.00 a day, over the next 3 years, wouldn't you rather have authentic parts? This is my inclination...I have already purchased the skirts form Gert. I am saving up for the RS tail and front urethane spoilers.

To loosely paraphrase Zig Ziglar, master sales trainer <img src="graemlins/a_smil17.gif" border="0" alt="[blabla]" /> , "It is often better to pay too much for something and get what you really want (Porsche Factory Parts), than to buy the cheap stuff. When you pay too much and get what you really want this is a one-time deal.

When you go the cheap route, and you don't get what you really want, every time you see the product , you are reminded, if I had only spent a few bucks more <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" /> , I would have what I really wanted! "

Get the RS kit from Gert, you deserve it! I know I do!! <img src="graemlins/bigok.gif" border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" />

I am installing my skirts next week. <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

Peanut,

If/when you have photos, could you e-mail some to me? It would be nice to see how you car looks!

Martin,

You're absolutely right & I'm tinking about that... Naturally, I'd like all OEM, wallet sometimes hesitates, but I'm thinking of doing same as you (buy something, save... buy more!).

We have a saying in Finland: "I'm too poor to buy cheap stuff", that's very true in many cases.

I'm thinking of doing RS Splitters & wing w/out skirts & then see how I like it. (it would be like sort of like 74 RSR style in new format of course, -74 RSR look (& 'some' mods) is something I'll propably do with my older 911).

This reminds me of another saying: A man will pay $2 for a $1 item that he really wants or needs, while a woman will pay $1 for a $2 item whether or not she needs or wants it.

I agree with the others concerning buying the factory parts. I bought an RS America-style wing for my '91 C2 cab from MA Shaw. Although the MA Shaw's fiberglass quality was top notch, you should know that ANY aftermarket fiberglass will require *substantial* prep work to bring it up to Porsche fit and finish standards, which can be expensive enough to negate any price advantage that the aftermarket fiberglass would other wise offer. In my case, my RS America wing was $450 (as compared to roughly $1000 for a factory wing); however, my body guy needed to do about $500 worth of prep (filling pin holes and sanding the area around the louvers) to get it ready for fitment.

In spite of it being a financial wash, I still went with the MA Shaw wing because the factory RS America wing has the rubber edge (which I didn't like) and required either drilling holes in my 964 decklid or fitting a pre-1989 911 decklid (which I didn't want to do).

One more tip, if you do go with an aftermarket wing: have the installer get some foam 3/8" weatherstripping from a hardware store and put it between the screen and the inside of the wing. Otherwise, the screen will rattle and make a sound like cymbals crashing every time you go over a bump or close the decklid.

Tom,
I've heard that saying before (and you've obviously met my WIFE!!).

That's an interesting point about the cost of factory parts. I never asked about Factory, thinking they would be outrageously priced? I would be surprised though, that the MA Shaw's, Better Bodies would bother to make them if their prices were equivelant to Factory prices? I bought the sideskirts from MA Shaw and he got me factory parts, I guess becuase they cannot be re-produced for the $750.

IF (and that's a big IF) the price of OEM is that cheap, then I have some questions to ask. But if that's the case, I guess it's bad luck to me (or anyone else) for not doing their homework on prices.

FF,
I'll try to get those photos together this weekend with good light. By the way, we just had a fire drill at work which was interesting, as the car drew quite the crowd itself, with both men AND women touching the wing, stroking the front spoiler. I guess it must stand out in the crowd. <img src="graemlins/bigok.gif" border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" />
