Post 996, 3.4L mods please help

My salesman just came back from a Porsche sales course. He says that the block on the 3.4L motor was designed to handle 1200hp. Obviously, the motor will never be modified to that level but knowing this, is it possible to bore out the block to 3.6L, or even 3.8L...or would that be just pissing in the wind?

A Porsche salesman said that?

He must be very good in the sales business.

Not a chance.

That's why Porsche used an entirely different engine for the GT3 and the Twin Turbo.

the fact that the turbo and the gt3 have different motor say nothing about the 3.4L ability to handle stress...

Of course it does.

The 996 engine can not handle the stress of the turbo. That's why they are using a different engine.

Even the GT3 racecars are not using the standard 996 engine.

The salesman is way off base with that statement.

If you want a different perspective go to the following message board and ask them...

Chris' Turbo Page

i am not saying that the 3.4L motor is stong enough to handle a turbo..there is more to a motor than just the block...
I am just saying that the block can handle the 1200hp..there is more to a motor than just a block..

your reasoning is wrong...it should be that Porsche is using the water cooled 3.4L motor to pass noise standards and emissions in all countries..they would have used the 3.6L motor in the GT3 on the 996 but it wouldn't pass emissions and noise for most countries. no where does it say that the 3.4L motor is any weaker...why re-invent the wheel if u already have a block that is proven, which is what the motor in the GT3 is..it is already proven why would.....
the 3.4L motor is what the 3.0 litre block was 20 years ago...

What do you mean by the block? Crankshaft, oil journals....etc? If so, it's a fact that the 996 motor's bottom end is considerably weaker than the GT3/Turbo motor. If the 996 motor was as strong, then why are none of them being used in racing?

If you put on the correct emmission equipment, the GT3 engine can pass the emmission standards. Some have already been brought over to the USA, modified, and have passed the tests.

As I said, go post that question on Chris' board and see what kind of answers you get. I'm sure it will differ than your salesman's statement.
