Hello,

This morning I went to take out my 993. Started right up in the garage, backed it out just fine, went to put it in first and go, and stalled it (I know). I started it back up, went to go again and stalled it once more (I usually don't do this I swear). This time, I tried to restart it and it cranks, but won't fire up. I checked the fuel pump fuse and it was fine, and I tried jumping it just to make sure it wasn't the battery, and that didn't help. The DME relay is the next thing I've seen to check, so I just ordered up a new one anyway. Does anyone else have any idea what I should try to get it to start back up?

Symptoms are DME relay 100%.

Did you order the solid state version?

I didn't, just the Stribel replacement. I'll cancel my order and pick that one up if it's really worth the upgrade. Fingers crossed that's what it is!

While waiting for the new relay you might be able to repair the old one. Remove the cover and check for cold solder joints. Others have posted about this job. If it works, keep the old relay for a spare..

Alright I'll take a look at it. Is there an easy/recommended way to remove the cover?

It snaps off. Use a small screwdriver or knife to pry out the bottom edges. Plus one on repairing that one and keeping it. My failure symptom was exactly as yours and there were three broken solder joints - usually the ones that hold the main relay frame to the board. You should be able to confirm if that's your problem in a few minutes. And if it is, be back on the road shortly thereafter.

Thanks for the advice. Comparing mine to the picture jrmdir linked, it looks quite different and to my untrained eye there don't appear to be cracks in the solder.

I have to use magnification when examining the solder joints. You may find some where the solder doesn’t flow well around the wire. I remove the old solder with a copper solder wick type product made for the purpose then re-solder. It sounds like you are a new owner. Welcome to the journey of learning many new diagnostic and repair tasks.

Gotcha, I'll do some of my own research on products like you mentioned and take a crack at it. Absolutely a new owner, only about two weeks now and having fun/learning a lot already! Cheers for the warm welcome.

Just curious: only asking because you are a new member, but your avatar looks familiar ... Vinwiki by any chance? If so, congrats!!!!! If not, welcome to rennlist regardless, glad to have you around.

You have nothing to loose to try the repair, give it a shot for sure. I’m also running the solid state version @mike cap mentioned above ... costs a few bucks more but worth the piece of mind not having to worry about the solder in my opinion ...

Vinwiki indeed, you've found me out! Thanks for the congratulations, it's been a crazy month or so, and I'm glad to be here.

Repairs will absolutely be attempted - whether or not I'm successful is another matter. If this normal DME I ordered fixes the problem I'll most likely be ordering one of the solid state ones to replace that.

Check dme cable connection under the seat, cable may have come loose

Could be that it was in cold start mode and was shut off quickly. I did this one time and had a tough time getting it restarted. Try it again today.

It's definitely possible I suppose. I'll give it a go tonight when I'm home.
