Default One more reminder: GET A SPARE DME RELAY!

I know this has been covered a lot but in case there are new members or procrastinators who need urging, I just suffered relay failure while driving. Fortunately, soon after I bought my car I ran across several threads advising a spare and I had one in my door pocket (together with my spare key fob battery - but that's another story). Anyway, I was back on the road in 5 minutes and have no idea what pain would have ensued if I did not have one handy. So, word to the wise - relay failure is not an urban legend - it happens!

As you can see, it's a typical case of (3) broken solder joints - which I've now repaired and packed away for use as my new spare.

I am with you, it hasn't happened to me, but I have an extra one in my door pocket, just in case. Good call on your end.

Truer words...you know the rest. Based on the recommendations on carrying a spare I read here, I had one. One day, car is running great, I parked in my garage, got out, saw car wasn't lined up right. Went to restart it, dead. Replaced DME, started right up. There were no warning signs at all it was going bad. Do it!

My spare relay has part number 993 615 227 01. I'm pretty sure I got it on Amazon for around $35? FWIW, both my "original" (which now I notice was not the right part - it has a 944 Turbo number !!) and the spare were made in Hungary and I seem to recall from other threads on this that this is where many of them come from.

I believe there is also a solid state DME relay now available that eliminates this recurring issue.

I have a spare in the glove box. What happens when it fails while driving? Feels like your running out of gas?

I put in the solid state one, and kept the original as a spare. I also keep spare belts in the car.

Yes, only more abrupt - maybe a brief chug but mostly it just plain shut down. Freaked me out as of course all the warning lights came on at the same time. Luckily I was on a residential street with no traffic. Started praying it was the relay and am glad it was!

One interesting thing - that also concerned me for a day or two - is that the Check Engine Light came on and stayed on. But there were no error codes which was odd so there was nothing to reset with my scanner. After I drove it a few miles it cleared up and has been fine.

I found this one online: http://www.ftech9.com/new-products/993-ssr and also one with a pump prime: http://www.ftech9.com/new-products/993-ssr-pp

Anyone have experience with this company?

The 964 and 993 ECU have the pump prime functionality already built-in.
