Tiptronic Fluid Change Questions

O.k. I did a search first and found 2 threads over in the 964 section that talked about needing a suction machine if you wanted to actually drain and fill all 9 quarts and that no special tool is needed to do the job BUT...
One of the biggest questions I still have is WHAT is the recommended fluid type and MFGR?
My local Porsche dealer told me they have NOT done and tip fluid changes because it is a sealed system and doesn't need it. I don't buy this and want to change mine now that my car is getting older (It's a 96) and has 26K miles on it! I go to the track for Driver's ed events at least once a year and about 4 to 5 autocrosses a year so I'm a little harder on my 993 than just average spirited street driving!
Can someone here answer for me what the best fluid is?
I remember reading on P-car that full synthetic is NOT a good option for the stick shift version BUT what about the tiptronic?
Has anyone here done the change with synthetic or what? ...and what are your end results?
I head from someone that synthetic is NOT a good idea for the tiptronic. Anyone else have any insight into this?
If someone can tell me that synthetic is indeed a better option, I'm all over it!

I'm still at work, so no books, but I will look for info when I get home. I think I have this somewhere and can't immagine a completely sealed system for the tranny. There has to be a way to change the fluid.

This is a routine and inexpensive procedure that is commonly done at Porsche dealers. I have no idea why your dealer said that and have never heard that line before.
I guess it must be like those 15,000 mile oil changes they recommend in the new Porsches. Ugh!
I had a 964 Tip that I recall the dealer used BMW brand trans fluid in, and it worked perfectly for many miles thereafter. My local Porsche dealer changed my trans fluid and replaced trans filter and trans sump gasket in my 993 last April for less than $300. The brand/type of fluid is not specified, but I know it was in stock and that the procedure was not a big deal at all.
Try calling other dealers or good independent shops in your area, or maybe a transmission shop and asking them if you want more opinions. I would also definitely consider finding a different dealer, even if you are just using them to ask questions, because you are not getting good advice.

You may be nearly confused as I am. I believe there are two completely different threads about changing transmission fluids.
Robin's www.p-car.com site describes how to change the transmission fluid in the final drive. He then discusses the advantages of 70W90 either synthetic or dino oil. I think the process to change the final drive fluid is the same for both manual shifting and automatic shifting cars.
You and I also have transmission fluid in our automatic transmissions. This is the process that Mark explains. The recommended fluid is now Dextron III.I have not read any discussion as to the availability of a synthetic.
But then again, I may be more confused than I first thought.

Thanks for all the responses. I want to do an entire flush and not just a partial. So I guess my questions expand a little bit:
1) I now know that Dextron III is acceptable but has anyone used Synthetic ATF (Redline, Motul, Amsoil, etc.) instead with good results?
2) Has anyone done a complete flush without a special tool? If so, HOW?
a95993tip: Thanks for the offer on the copied pages of the manual, I will most likely take you up on that! I can give you a local 847 fax number or pick up copies from you. I'm in East Wilmette close to the Bahai'i temple.

I too would be interested in a 100% Tranny flush. I just changed my fluid and put in Motul DEXIII. I had problems with fluid levels being too low. After I topped it up it was fine, but after 2-3 months the level was low again. No leaks present. Strange.

Back to OT:
I found out the tool for full flush (pipe fitting) is ONLY $12.13 at Suncoast Porsche (discount given to PCA members) so I ordered it along with the filter, gasket and o-ring. Should be here around March 19th and I hope to do the maintenance soon after that!

What is the filter? I see no mention of it in my manual. It just states that the strainer should be cleaned and put back on along with a new O-ring every 40,000kms

hmm, well there is a Transmission Filter that the Porsche dealer sold me and it is also listed on www.europeanautomotive.com for the 96 Tiptronic.
..and I found 2 other threads over in the 964 forums about the filter, gasket, and o-ring being required. I heard mixed reviews on if the tool (pipe fittings) are required but for $12.13 I felt it worth the investment!

I am following your thread. I also ordered the filter ($68.74), the o-ring, and gasket. Yesterday I picked up 4 quarts of Mobil 1 ATF and one quart of Mobil 1 70w90 for the final drive. I don't know if I am comfortable with flushing the system. You have the pipe connection but have you determined how you will flush the system yet? Gravity feed or power flush?
How will you know the system is fushed?
