Have any of you run the Big Bend Open Road Race in West Texas? Thoughts, advice, inside tips?

Big Bend Open Road Race

"The Most Challenging Open Road Race in the World"

Sit back, buckle up and get ready for the ride of a lifetime. That’s what the Big Bend Open Road Race brings to Fort Stockton and Sanderson each April. This event alone brings in hundreds of people to these small West Texas communities from all over the U.S. and Europe.

This year’s Big Bend Open Road Race will have something for everyone, so make plans now to be a part of this exciting event in West Texas. The event starts off in Sanderson on Wednesday, April 25th and Thursday April 26th with activities for the racers including registration, technical inspection, rookie school, practice runs, and qualifying.

On Friday, April 27th, the activities move to Fort Stockton for additional racer functions and a Car Show from 4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. in Rooney Park. Everyone is invited to come and meet the drivers and see their cars. The Parade will depart from the park at 5:30 p.m. and will proceed North on Mail St. turning left onto Dickinson Blvd and continuing to Auto Zone.

On Saturday, April the 28th, the Annual After Race Party in the Park will be held in Rooney Park from 12:30 – 5:30 p.m. The racers will end up here after they cross the finish line. There will be music, food, and drinks and lot and lots of FUN!!! Everyone is invited to come out and see the cars, take pictures, get autographs, etc. Don’t miss out on this racing event. DATES :

* April 25th & 26th - Registration, Tech, Rookie Orientation, Qualifying, Practice all held in Sanderson, TX

* April 27th - Registration, Tech, Car Show, & Parade Fort Stockton, TX

* April 28th - Race (starts just 3 miles south of Fort Stockton), After Race Party in the Park!, Race Banquet, Fort Stockton, TX Race Banquet Fort Stockton, TX

COURSE :
* Fort Stockton to Sanderson and back US Highway 285 closed from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

* Distance – 118 miles (59 miles each way)

* Down to Sanderson the first 10 miles are basically straight and the last 50 miles have 59 turns and many great elevation changes.

* Top Speed – 220.8 mph by Dave Golder in 2002

* Course record AVG Speed 172.249 mph in 2013 set by Tom Whalen.

COMPETITION STRUCTURE:

Divisions/Classes:

Street Rod Division: 85 mph, 90 mph, 95 mph

Touring Division: 100 mph, 105 mph, 110 mph

Grand Touring Division: 115 mph, 120 mph, 125 mph

Grand Sport Division: 130 mph, 135 mph, 140 mph, 145 mph, 150 mph

Super Sport Division: 155 mph, 160 mph

Unlimited Division: Unlimited (180 and up)

The first five divisions are conducted in rally like fashion – closest average speed to the class wins. In Unlimited it is the fastest down and back. Cars regularly compete at speeds well in excess of 200 mph.

I guess nobody has any exerience? I am hoping to run this year with my 993 and was hoping for setup advice etc. It is similar and I think related to Silver State.

  • Inspect your brakes.
  • Verify your wheels are torqued on properly
  • Fresh tires rated well above the speed you plan to travel
  • Verify your car insurance covers such events
  • Have fun!
