Robert
I'm with you. I change oil only 1x/yr (daily driver, but only 5k mi/year) & temps from low teens to 100+. My car is never parked outside for long in the winter. I prefer to have the greater 50W protection during our hot summers & for DEs - temp conditions over which I have no control.

If I remember right (everything gets a little fuzzy at those temps!) my car was around the 248 mark. I was eyeballing it as I was lapping, I'm sure of that.

I'll be interested to hear how your car behaves this summer. Do you get out to TWS for any DEs?

[quote]My dealer received a bulletin from Porsche suggesting 0x40 for 993, 986, and 996's

FWIW, the dealer I spoke with said that the bulletin was due more to customer complaints of tappet noise on startup than to any "advantage" that 0W might have, especially here in SoCal. He did say, however, that with cars driven in continuos colder climes and/or with cars that are not run for weeks at a time, the 0W offers faster delevery to the valve train/lifters.
...One more reason to drive it daily, especially in sunny Socal!

Fyi, this is the URL from the PCA site from Anderson/Reiser about Mobil 1, 0x40/15x50 http://www.pca.org/tech/tech_qa_question.asp?id={D511B82E-9AE1-4564-8F74-724C0847AD24}

I used M1 15W-50 until two years ago when I switched two either Redline 10w-40 or Motul 300V 10W-40 on my 993TT and my Audi S4. My 993TT originally come with Shell synthetic 15W-40 from Porsche. Redline techline told me to use 10W-40 instead of their 15W-50. Motul website recommend 10W-40 for the Porsche.

Mobil1 is a very good oil, I just prefer to use the 100% ester synthetic.

Robert, no I have made it to TWS for a DE in my car yet; I had hoped to go up near dallas to Motorsport Ranch for the DE in May, but had a work conflict.
I remain a bit nervous about the 0w-40 in the Texas heat, but since 40 weight is the factory fill, and most every technical expert on lubes says its fine, I'll give it a go. I will, however , keep a keen eye on oil temps. If I go to a DE in the heat of summer, I'll switch to 15w-50 to be safe.
