Default BMC vs. K&N air filter

Just curious if anyone out there uses a BMC air filter? I was given one by a friend and decided to use it instead of my K&N. I also see that Fabspeed is promoting them. The reason I ask is that the BMC are double the price of the K&N filters. Is there any performance to go along with this high premium? I'm gonna keep it anyway so if anyone wants my K&N (essentially new, about 20 miles on it bought new from AJUSA), I'm selling it for $35 shipped. Just PM me. Thanks!

The K&N filters have a reputation for having a surround which deteriorates and the pieces which flake off can enter the engine. Not good!

For this reason, the BMC filters are the only ones I would use.

However, I seem to recall that dyno results showed that these types of filters reduced horsepower on our cars.

JDOC7...

I bought both filters after a month of ownership last year. IMO, the BMC filter did not "sit" as well in the box as the K&N did. For that reason only, I use the K&N.

I highly doubt either filter will offer more hp...and....if Mr. Graham Mitchell's recollection is accurate re: dyno testing. I'll be sliding my OEM paper filter back in asap !!!

Coincidentally, I have the BMC Filter...if anyone wants it....the first PM to me....gets it FOC (Free of Charge !!!)

Happy Sunday.....

Default Falls apart

I have tried both K&N and BMC in my 993 and both cases, the filter frame falls apart with time. The problem are that in both cases, the frame are simply too thick compared to the stock filter.

I am back using the stock filter

Here's one quote from DJF1: "I have done a dyno comparison in my car almost two years ago ( was posted here) . One run with stock filter/ airbox cover next run with K&N filtercharger and motorsound airbox. Results??? Actal HP LOSS at top end albeit a small amount ( 3hp) and a slight redistribution of torque in favor of the K&N. Check some "tuner" websites and compare their claims with my ACTUAL test...

Another indication to you should be the fact that the factory on the RS has a cold air scoop which connects from the grill to the airbox opening.

Reports in the past of K&N cone filterchargers disinegrating from the heat!!!"

see https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...hreadid=106484

I hope this helps...

Graham..

Thanks for the post....my next question would be......how do I get an RS cold air scoop that "connects from the grill to the airbox opening" ??

Seems logical, more vacuum created by funneling from the air pressure being forced in from the grill.

Now that I think about it....the RS had a fixed rear wing didn't it...??? Hhmmm....C4S has the operational wing.......cold air scoop doesn't seem like it would match/fit.

How about this - for us motorized wing guys - a large diameter flexible plastic hose that could raise and lower with the rear wing and which was directly connected from the rear grill to the airbox? Maybe with a NACA style duct just below the grill.

Think it would work? It might actually reduce the amount of air since the spoiler wall effectively does the same thing albeit indirectly.

Any engineers or airflow specialists want to opine?

Graham ......Outstanding !!!!!!

I am going to email Gert and see if this will fit...considering the operational rear wing....and whether or not it will actually help performance.

Graham,
Do you know if that air scoop will fit a factory Motorsound airbox?

Keith - can you reply to this thread with the info you get from Gert?

Thanks to all.

i don't believe that scoop will fit on a motorized wing. i've actually thought of buying one of those scoops and hacking it to fit under the motorized spoiler. The only problem with that approach is that i'm afraid once the wings moves up the spoiler wall won't be effective since the intake will be pointed up.

Cheers,
Boris

This scoop is a stock Turbo part, as detailed at
http://p-car.com/diy/intake/ It snaps into the airbox in place of the stock elbow. I made my own motorsound airbox, so don't know if it will fit the factory part, but if you have the 2 snap-in locks at the openng, it should.

According to Robin's test, the rear wall on the moveable tail cars directs cold air into the intake, so this part is not required, even if it would fit. There is a matching rubber part for the heater fan intake on the left side.

I took a peak through the spoiler grill. If you look carefully you will notice the air intake is very well positioned and should not require any intake scoops...

Cheers,
Boris
