Our '98 993 came with the scissor jack in a green felt sack and I replaced the air pump with the next model of Porsche air pump (a smaller version) and they both fit nicely in the spare.

thanks for helping a new guy!!

Hi Bigwood,

If your car has the Carrera style jack I would store it in the garage and get a scissors style jack as the Carrera style single foot jack is dangerous to use. The car can slip off of it when used on less than level. uneven or a soft road shoulder.

Emergency jacking options are discussed at the bottom of this page:

My understanding is that the 993 Turbo may have come with a scissors jack like the 944. The Carrera 993 came with the unsafe lever jack.

I store my jack along with spare tire in the basement. I don’t plan on using it. If I’m close enough to home, I can get a spare wheel. Otherwise it’s AAA time.

My driving setup courtesy of scouring eBay; a 996/986 foam tray, jack and tool roll holding additional tools and spares. The 996/986 foam tray can be trimmed to fit perfectly, and if done carefully looks stock. My original jack is safely tucked away, but recently came out for a local car gathering.

Probably the best decision.

I foolishly leave my (un-inflated) spare tire in the frunk of my 993. It's a reasonable bet the inflator hasn't worked since the late 90's. I have the lever style jack that will kill me if I try to use it.

Exactly why am I lugging all of this around?

I recall reading somewhere that the spare in front provides some measure of front end crash protection. Also, while removing weight is generally a good thing, taking out the spare would make the car even more rear-weight biased.
