993 "didn't pass" Calif. smog???????
I took my 1996 993 for its smog test on tuesday. It appears to be a new type of test with a OBDII connection and a "dyno" type of system.
After the test, the technician called me over and told me that the OBDII read out was incomplete due to the fact that I did not drive the car alot.
He showed me on the computor that there were many test that were reading "incomplete". He said that they were having alot of problems with the new ($100!!!) test with cars that were not driven regularly. He said that I should go drive the car for a week and bring it back for a retest (at no additional charge). So, I have to go make some smog to pass the smog test???!!!
Has anyone had any experience with this?

911Jeff, check the archives on CA smog issues.. There's a specific amount of time that the car needs to be driven, at specific speeds, etc to get the properly compuer codes to be set.
Sounds a bit strange, and it is.

Or a Dually 1 ton truck with a gross vehicle weight over 10000 lbs. At least that is what they told me when I got the truck smogged. I was kind of looking forward to watching strap the thing down on the dyno....

I have also heard to run the holy crap out of it before you get there, and make sure it is nice and warm. Mine passed the new dyno $100 test with no probs other than the eagle eye I had to have as someone was playing the video game of "driving" my car in the right rev/speed bands. Not fun

How often do you drive the car?
Do you know of any time that power was interrupted to your car?
There is a good chance than 1 week of driving your car will not satisfy the sequences that will reset the flags. If you have an issue with time, take it to your tech and have him run the sequences with the PST.

Do a search as there was an earlier post which described how to manually run your car through it's cycles. Porsche dealers are alleged to charge a couple of hours labor to do it for you.
Also, NEVER take your car to a Test Only facility unless it is mandated by your registration notice. I failed the "visual inspection" and the measured emission results were much closer to the fail zones than a subsequent retest at my friendly local station. Fail rates at these places are apparently much greater.
