Default Wheels

I'm getting close to buying a 993 and the car has the 16 inch wheels on it. My 928 has Turbo Twist 18s on it which I purchased new from Wheel Enhancement in Culver City. Because at first we tried what I believe was the correct wheel for a 993 or 996 but it was rubbing the 928's fender in the rear, we tried a 1/2 inch narrower rear wheels which I was told are Boxster wheels. I currently run 265/35/18 on these wheels so the tire size is the same as most 993's and 996's with the TT wheels (I think). You can guess where I'm going with this. I want to swap the wheels out and put them on the 993 when I get it. Perhaps I can get Wheel Enhancement or some place else to do a trade straight across for some used 1/2 wider ones that are right for the 993 (I'm assuming that all 993's except Turbos and S'types run the same offset etc? Anybody know the answer about this? I suppose if the only difference between the Boxster wheel is that it has less rim to the inboard side of the car that it won't look like its too recessed compared to the outter edge of the fender, which I could live with if a trade isn't feasible.....or maybe I can put in a spacer? The next question is if I'd have the same issue with the front wheels. I'm going to try to call Wheel Enhancement but maybe some of you have some knowledge about this issue for a second opinion? Where is the offset size stamped on the wheels? Maybe I can take a look tonight and repost. Just want to make sure I have the sizing right so it doesn't look funny.

There appear to be a number of questions in your post and I am not qualified to answer all of them. What I can tell you is I just upgraded to 18 inch wheels on my narrow body 993. My wheels had offsets of 52 on the front and 65 on the back. I was told these would fit all narrow body 993's. I know a friend who also recently changed wheels and his had an offset of 50 on the front and the same 65 on the back. I found a great deal of info on the requirements by searching the archives. Since there have not been a lot of responses to your post I think you will be able to better answer your various questions by taking a look at previous similar threads on the same subject.

What year is the 993 you are getting? If its 95 and older, you will need a Steering Rack Brace part no. 993-347-131-02, around $40, to take 18" wheels. This is to reinforce the steering rack unit.

Thanks for the answers guys....I was a little embarrassed when nobody answered at first. As if the question was asked too many times in the past. I was able to reach the place I bought the wheels and got most of the answers I was looking for, but in the end I need the exact specifications off my existing wheels to get my final answer on fitment. I think I may buy a '95 or '96 depending on price. I've really been on the fence due to my concerns over a car with a warranty or a 993 which I have my heart set on. We'll see in the end but just before I buy I will definately bounce it off all you guys to see if there's anything I haven't considered etc. Thanks again for the input.....

ps can't buy one soon enough, just dropped another $1000+ on replacement parts this year for my 928....the car and buying parts is getting old!

Hey Mike, just want to confirm that the steering rack brace is not needed on '96's and later cars when moving up to 18" wheels. True? Is it still ok to go the track without the brace? Thanks.

pop a front and rear wheel off of your 928 and look at the markings/numbers on the inner portion of the wheel. post your findings here including the part number. someone here should be able to better identify what you actually have from those numbers.

Rick,

I wasn't 100% sure when we discussed this weekend, so I did a quick search. I think this post will put you at ease...

Rick,

Your car should have it. If for some reason it doesn't, you should get the brace even if you're tracking on 17's.
