Default rev Limiter/ Engine cutout on these cars?

Previous owner said thes cars do not have rev limiters at redline. Is this correct? I don't want to find out the hard way.

Morning drive to work was mostly deserted with dry conditions. Getting around a slower car in second, I passed him and looked in the rear view mirror to see if I was clear to get back in the lane. The car was wound out at approx redline when the car cutout like I had hit a rev limiter. Worried that I might have over reved it if these things do not have limiters. Would very much like for the previous owner to be wrong in this case.

If they do have it, are they ignition or fuel cutoffs?

Thanks

They do have revlimiters, but it cuts in a bit higher than redline (about 7k for my 96)

I experienced the same thing. That is good to know.

Just as a caveat - the rev limiter works when accelerating up, but will not prevent a "mechanical" over-rev from a downshift. I.e., if your downshift causes the engine to spin too fast, despite the rev limiter, you'll hear some very expensive sounds. Most common is a 5-2 (missed 4) downshift.

There's little harm in occasionally hitting the rev limiter, but it's not a "good" thing for the engine.

Dan,
You forgot about the 4 to 5 upshift where you get third or the 3 to 4 upshift where you get second. Not that I have every done that....

Speak of this problem, (which I've never done, also ) is there a cure for the sloppy feeling shifting in these cars. Maybe harder bushings somewhere?

As well as not providing over-rev protection for missed shifts, it also does not protect against over-revving when not under load (i.e. if someone floors the pedal when in neutral or a clumsy heal-toe)

That was meant to be "heel toe". "Heal-toe" is what you hope happens when you stub your toe

Wow! Didn't realize that was the money shift you made. A guy at the Road America PCA Club Race this past year did a 4th to 3rd upshift at the fastest part of the track (kink) and ended up with a lot more than just a damaged motor when the car locked up, spun and bounced of some ARMCO at 100+mph.

Hate to go off topic, but...

Grant, is that picture in your avatar the car that was detailed in one of the magazines (911 &Porche World or Excellence) a few months back out of Canada?

If so, that must be an absolute blast to drive!

Dave
