Post High Intensity Discharge...

I just spoke with a guy who said he could install a High Intensity Discharge (HID) setup in my 993. The total cost for the pair installed would be $609.

I have seriously considered getting Litronics but did not want to spend $2K on it.
I don't know much about lights but would appreciate any info regarding these HID lights.
I was also told they never burn out. The price does include all the parts needed for the change over..

Thanks for the help.

Here's the difference: Litronics are self-leveling headlights meaning that they will adjust where they project based on the angle of the vehicle. What you are being quoted is to upgrade the bulbs to an HID system (which is part of the Litronic assembly). A HID system includes a bulb filled with xenon gas and a ballast which generates approx 24k volts to start the electrical arc through the gas. $600 installed is a fair price for this conversion. It is my understanding that 993s have HID hi and low beams. An HID conversion at this price probably does not include two sets of bulbs and ballasts.

Check out <a href="http://24.102.140.196/technology.htm" target="_blank">http://24.102.140.196/technology.htm</a> for more info on the HID. I hope this helps.

Nate,

Maybe I completely miss the boat about the 993 litronics, but I was not aware that the 993 litronics had self leveling. I know the European model Porsche equipped with litronic head lights have a leveling adjustment **** next to the ignition key, but again I didn't know they were height level self adjusting.

Also I believe the litronics headlight in a 993 is only for the low beam, not both.

Hi everyone,
I have a TT, which have Litronic headlites standard. Robin's post is correct, they are not self leveling, and Litronics are on the low beam only.

I think none of the 993 Litronic is self leveling. Beginning MY 2K 996 and 986 Litronics have self leveling, and of course I could be wrong... VIKEN !!!

The European Union requires that cars made with HID aka Xenon headlights be equipped with a self-leveling system and headlight washers. As such, all European manufacturers have included these features on all cars including export models. I don't think the 993 was an exception. Those of you who have factory-installed HID can find out easily. When you first turn on the headlights, they should move up and down. This is a test of the system and confirmation that it's working.

Litronic's sold as Tequipment and installed by owner do not incorporate this system. This is true of the 993 and 9x6 versions.

Robin, the little **** next to the ignition switch is for manual leveling of regular Halogen headlamps.

As Yogi Berra said, "deja vu all over again."

<a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=000568" target="_blank">HID conversion - back again. </a>

<a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=000413" target="_blank">Litronic headlights </a>

and (many) other threads.

OEM Litronics had self leveling - aftermarket does not. 993 oem HID is low beam only.

Seth - $609 installed is a good price IF the guy doesn't butcher, scratch, dent or otherwise damage your car. Has he done this before on a 993 or are you the beginning of the learning curve?

I have not noticed my Litronic moving at all. There is no Up/down "CHATTY CHAT CHAT" that the 996/986 does. Also with the factory 996 Lit's I could easily see them adjusting when backing down a drive way, not so with the 993's.

At first I did not like the 993 lit's, but I adjusted them and now am very happy. The car had been lowered by the previous owner, and I guess no ever re-adjusted the head lights.

Thumbs up

I recently put an autolamp kit into my car. It makes a world of difference on dark streets up to the point that high beams do not add much (I think they are levelled correctly).

I opted for the 6000k kit which was supposed to have a purplish tinge but looking back I should have saved ~200.00$ for the regular kit.

In any case, it took about 1 hour to install and would take about 15 min to return to regular Halogen bulbs with minimal modification to the headlight casing (one hole to put the wires through). Putting them in myself gave me the satisfaction, saved me some money, and I know that it was done to my satisfaction.

I recently installed an aftermarket HID kit (with D2S bulbs) also. Result is night and day in comparison to the factory halogen H1 bulbs or even the aftermarket so-called "Xenon" bulbs (not the true HID).
Installation was fairly simple but not quite plug-n-play. Did have to cut an exit hole on the headlight housing for the wires. BTW got tremendous help and info from the DIY section on Robin's p-car.com

Like ads993, I too opted for the 6000K unit. It does go on with a purplish hue for about a few minutes but then it turns almost pure white after that. Wondering if should stayed with the 4300K and save about $200....? But overall I'm very satisfied with the upgrade.
